1 - I see some team jersys online. They look cool. Are these intended for general public consumption?

2 - I noticed the bib shorts, good idea. Them don't seem to accomodate my as yet unfinished physique, 5'7" 230lbs. Are there some bibs closer to these proportions?

There are some extreme differences in sizing so you really have to be careful. Some companies size "Euro pro" where an XL jersey fits chest size 35-37. Some of the more realistic US brands have something closer to normal where XL is 42-44" chest. Check performancebike.com. Some of their less expensive shorts come in sizes up to XXXL. Get some of those for now to make you a little more comfortable. Keep riding your bike and in no time you will be looking for smaller sizes and can wear anything you want. Ask me how I know.

If you can buy em, it's general concumption. They don't go well with big guts ,hairy legs and black knee sox.

Try http://www.bikejerseys.com/
I have had very good luck with this company, you can contact them and send them your measurements and they will tell you what size to get...Like RainmanP says, one company might mark their jersey as XL where the exact same physical size from another manufacturer might actually be a XXXL. There is that much difference in sizing.

Ahhhh... Euro sizing... I have a 38" chest [actually more like 37.5" but who's counting?]. I typically wear medium Louis Garneau. Sugoi, Voler, etc. In Euro sizes, I am often an XL. Go figure.

I think you'll have trouble finding bibs that fit you [for now]. But back in the day, you used to see guys wearing their half-shorts with clip-on braces [suspendes] to get the same effect. Something to consider.
