Hey all,

I am building up a wheel using a 27x1 1/4 Araya W/O rim. The rim is 1980's at the latest. I am having a horrible time finding an ERD for it. I found a spreadsheet w/ a 27x 1 1/4 Araya W/O steel rim. I'm am pretty sure my rim is not steel because it is not magnetic. Is it safe to assume my rim is not steel? Is there any safe way to check if it is? Does anyone have the ERD from the rim im using? Any help is very appreciated :)

Thanks
Matt

Pulled these values from Sheldon's spoke calc program spreadsheet. First value is the ERD. Spreadsheet can be downloaded from his webste: search for spocalc or something of the like. Put in your hubs and rims and it does all the math for you. Hope it helps.

616.4 0.0 27" 630 Araya TF-110
618.4 0.0 27" 630 Araya W/O-2 steel

edit - reread your post saying yours were W/O's, but likely an alloy type. So this may not be as much help to you as I first thought. sounds like you may just have to do some measuring.

If a magnet doesn't stick to it it isn't steel. Some stainless (INOX) is non-magnetic, but I'll betcha your rim isn't stainless. The only other metal that I know rims were made of was titanium. I'll betcha your rims aren't titanium either.

Titanium 27" rims, now that's something I'd like to see! lol.

Today, mine felt like they were made of depleted uranium. Magnets won't stick to that, either.

[QUOTE=MattP.]Hey all,

Yes. Also both rims will use the same tires. The factors to be concerened with is if the rim has a ridge to hold a tire over say 90 pounds psi or not.

If it is steel there will be no mistaking that it has been chromed. That being said some of the aluminum Araya units have a very shiny and deep gloss anodizing that looks more like chrome than many aluminum parts.
