It seems that I damage a lot of tubes by pulling the stem too hard when removing the pump from the valve stem.

Sometimes I tear the valve stem off or make a tear at the base of the stem and the tube.

I spit in the pump attachment to lubricate it which helps, but still the removal is tight.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

You might be jamming the pump too far down on the stem when starting out. It just has to be on only slightly. Or, the problem might be your pump. Try a different pump from a friend and that should tell the tale.

Mike,
Presta or Shrader? I was having the same problem with Shrader tubes. No problem with Presta.

Been there, done that. If the pump head doesn't want to come off, I twist it back and forth a few degrees as I pull. With prestas (don't mess with schraeders much), I deflate and push the stem back down into the tire every so often, otherwise they seem to keep working further and further out, 'til the stress is too much and they spring a leak at the base of the stem... usually as I pull the pump head off.

Thats funny. I had the exact opposite problem. I destroyed about 10 presta valves before I switched to the beefier Shraeder. :)

I'm having trouble with both Shrader and Presta valves.

Maybe I am sticking the valve too deep into the pump. I dunno, I'm confounded here.

On my blackburn pump, the ends that hook up to the valve have a threaded compression fitting. You unscrew it before putting it on the valve, tighten it, then pump. reverse for removal. Maybe that is a similar situation mike.

Yea mines like this too Mike maybe the lock nut is adjusted a bit too tight. I never bother to tighten or undo mine just shove it on and yank it off. It loves it:D

Frame pump or floor pump? For a frame pump, I'm in the habit of releasing the lever, the smacking the pump off the stem. This way I don't twist or stress the stem as I remove it.

For a floor pump, I release the lever the pull straight down, quick and fast.
