Folding Bikes - Travelling with a cheap folder (?)

I've read a thread about a guy who is thinking about travelling with a fixed gear (!!!). He was talking about a fully loaded touring experience.
Well, My case is a bit different:
I'm thinking about getting a *cheap folder bike* for commuting but also for travelling.
I know that folks who ride the BF (and simliar high end folders) will approve the idea - But what about those with the average bike have to say about that ?
I think that a steel folder that has a good gear coverage and good 20'' wheels (and tyres) can do the job too
I would appreciate if one will post his opinion/travel log

Traveling by Air? The only problem I foresee is the weight limit on bags. The older folders weigh close to 40lb. By the time you pack it in a suitcase and add some gear you are over the weight limit of most airlines(50lbs-US domestic)....In my opinion, paying an overweight or oversize airline fee defeats the purpose of a folder..

You could pickup a used modern Dahon or similar that would suit your travel needs much better

if it rolls, you can do it. I wouldn't hesitate and it will make a great story. people will be like, "you rode that across africa!", and you'd be all, "yup."

there was a dude that rode a bmx bike in the NYC triathlon. I love stuff like that.
