I gotta get one of those new tandems that get 30 miles to a granola bar---the one I have only gets 10 miles on two cheeseburgers/order of onion rings, and 3 beers!---sam

Rode 33 miles today and pilot consumed half an apple, stoker had one foodbar.
Fast food does not make you faster!
It hardly that simple. We generally require 2 Clif bars for 30 miles. But that's for an off-road excursion.

30 miles!!!! That requires a full breakfast halfway through. Mind You Longer rides need a full breakfast before the start and a Curry the night before.

I only need to promise a coffee shop or ice cream at the halfway point.

Just goes to show that we do not have the streamlined go faster bikes. A promise definitely isn't enough for my pilot though.
My stoker is my wife. We make a good team. Morning rides end with coffee, noon rides end with something cold.

I could be wrong, but I suspect this is a humorous metaphor and has more to do with someone who may be considering a more active riding regime or perhaps a tandem upgrade moreso than insight into the ride related fueling requirements of other teams.
The adult stoker I ride with on longer rides seems to require almost no food, drink, or breaks... argh! "Want a cliff bar?" "No." "Need to fill up a bottle?" "No." "Want to stop up ahead and get off for a few minutes?" "Only if you need to."
We did our first century last month, and she was soooo proud of herself for drinking a whopping two bottles of watered-down gatorade plus one bottle of cytomax, and eating something at each of the four rest stops. I'm sure I had over a dozen bottles, and had some bars in between the supported stops.
...and, yes, she is pedaling. ;)

I disagree.
We had a 38 max speed the week before last and was feathering the brakes at the time. We live in Florida, so there aren't too many hills around that we can climb and then coast down faster than that.
I directly attribute this speed to the many "Biggie Size" meals consumed by the captain over the course of many years.
Fast food can make you faster, but only on one side of the hill.

Two words to help you get extra milage after your fast food stop. "Supersize me"!
