Vexed Generation, in the past, have made some amazing pieces of clothing. They were the company that invented that whole one-strapped DJ bag thing (I think YakPak actually lisenced their version of it straight from VG). They were total innovators in terms of using ballistic/military fabrics who urban clothing. Their "ninja hood" hoodies were fairly popular for a while too. I think that Vexed designed the first Puma cycling jacket too... the clear one from last year? I'm not sure but that seems right.

I imagine that thing is going to be insanely expensive. I'd rock one though.

That, right there, is another checkmark in the "pro" column.

i kinda like the idea of the integrated filters, but if i wore that jacket i'd be a. feeling like i needed a lance or b. feeling like one of those black bloc cats and that i should go burn something down, or figure out a way to get teargassed or something.

other than that, it looks like a pretty good design, especially the tails.

You'd so have to wear sunglasses with that too. Of course, that little zipper pull hanging right between your eyes might get annoying.

Yes, that would be perfect for a black bloc Critical Mass, no? Provided everybody wore one.

I like the gorilla one waaay more, because your mouth and nose are actually open. Whenever I've worn something that covers my face in the winter, I'm pulling it open in about 5 minutes to spit/wipe off all the excess spit and snot that have accumulated.

If I were to ride more than 2 blocks in that "urban hoodie", I'm pretty sure the mask part would just be a congealed block of mung.

The Puma jacket isn't a winter jacket. The part that covers your face is an air filter, not a balaclava, and thus designed to keep the mung out.

Holy Apocalypse, batman. What it needs is some diaphanous streamers to trail behind you and a low frequency whistle to give a low moaning sound as you whip down the road. Ride of banshee....

I like the Oakley Medusa cap and goggles better...

Cold? Get a neoprene face mask for $10 at your local outdoor supply store.
Scared of particulate emissions? Get a Respro for $40.

Is it an air filter or a heat exchange? An air filter would be a stupid idea, but a heat exchange is great. It's designed to heat the air as you're breathing it in, which is better for your lungs.

You wrap yourself in warm clothing, but you keep on breathing cold air. The North Face Heat Exchanger Balaclava uses QX-Tec technology to warm and moisten the air you breathe in, which decreases your perception of the cold and helps prevent the dreaded cold weather lung burn. The Heat Exchanger is still a Balaclava, too, so it keeps your whole head warm in brutally cold conditions.

Note that a scarf is also a pretty effective heat exchanger. I get a nagging cough from being outside once the air temp drops below 40 or so (it's really annoying), but covering my mouth keeps it from being full-on body-wracking fits.

agreed, I've always been able to get away with a scarf and a beanie.

Why would you wear a jacket if it wasn't cold out? Just for the "air filter"? Regardless, if I'm ever doing anything more strenuous than strolling outside (running, biking, etc.) I'm generating enough spit, phlegm, and snot to clog a kitchen collander. The last thing I need is something holding it all right up against my face.

I feel like this should be worn by a ninja WTO protester. Which wouldn't make any sense, since you wouldn't be able to see any ninja worth his salt. Eh.

Get a wool headband or beanie, depending on the temperature, and good wide wool scarf. Tuck ends of scarf into front of shirt/collar. Wrap layer loosely around lower half of noggin. Procure cheapass aviators with the weird shade fade from top to bottom. Nine billion times more "urban" than any of this weird Puma Flux **** they're pulling.

edit: Opinion holds true only until the Chinese "Puba" knockoffs arrive. At which point I'm flying up there and buying them for everyone I know.

I just grow my beard and hair out for the winter.

A scarf and beanie help too though.

I think i'd rock that ninja costume though.
