I have a newbie question,
what is the proper seat hight? and is it better to have the seat a little lower or higher?(I just purchased a trek 1200, had it fitted at my LBS, but i think the seat should be raised an inch or so!)
thanks!!!!

BOKABIKER if you think your seat needs raising by such a huge amount its clear your LBS did not check your bike setup for you properly. Adjustments are usually made in fractions of an inch bit by bit until perfect then mark your seat stem so you don't lose it.
I would suggest you go back to the LBS and ask them to adjust the bike to fit you. its not just the saddle but the stem height and reach etc all contribute to make the bike safe and comfortable to ride.
There are lots of previous threads on this subject you could check out. Best of luck, enjoy

Here's a link:
Colorado Cyclist Bike Fit (http://www.coloradocyclist.com/BikeFit/index.cfm). Scroll down to the section on saddle height. To determine your inseam length, put on your cycling shorts and stocking feet, get an 1.5 inch thick book, and go to an uncarpeted area next to a wall. Face the wall and pull the book snugly up into your crotch, holding one edge of the book flush with the wall (so the top will be level). The height to the top of the book is your inseam.
