Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - But it is fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I'm driving to work this morning (yeah, I know, but it is too far and a bit too dangerous to commute to) and I come up on member of the local spandex kit crew riding SS. Presumably it's his winter trainer, so when I pulled along beside him I teased him a bit and told him he should be riding fixed. To which he replied, "But it is fixed." Now, I'm kinda confused because it clearly is not FG, he is coasting as he tells me this and when we stop at the light he hops out of the saddle and plants both feet on the ground. I proceed to ask how he could coast if it is fixed and he replies, "well, I can't coast on the other side [of the hub]."
Poor bastard.
the festive lycra ink absorbs into their skin, its not their fault

I only love NJS stamped lycra... all other lycra are for poseurs.

Who knows, but for what it's worth... every time I try to ride with any of the local spandex kit crews, I literally get dropped within the first 15 mins (if i'm lucky to hang for that long).
but,
the only way to get fast is to ride with those who are faster...

Actually it's a well known fact that spandex make you faster. Less friction wen accelerating, and less wind resistance at speed. Wanna be a faster rider? just squeeze your ass into a pair of spandex pants, and leave those natural fiber clad losers in your dust!

If you're wearing lycra than you've got nowhere to go.

You should have ran him off the road with your car. That'll show him for not riding fixed...

You know this may just be me, but it really pisses me off when people make obnoxious judge mental comments about my bike. ESPECIALLY when they shout them out the window of a car.
If I wanna run a freewheel and wear spandex, who the hell are you to tell me I shouldn't. Instead of trying to defend his ride by pointing out he had a fixed cog on the other side of his hub, he shoulda called you out by pointing out that maybe YOU should be riding fixed.
Oh yeah, and spandex is sexah!

I made eye contact and we were both slowing down for a light (should have been my first clue, no?). I wasn't trying to be all judgemental, just excited to see someone else in town without all the gears (there are only about 5 FG riders in Memphis, so I thought this was maybe someone new.)

In my opinion, there's no reason to shout at a bike rider from your car unless the bike rider is your friend.
To each his own......

I rode a fixed bike to work this morning in lycra shorts. And I did have somewhere to go. Work.

I wear 6 panel padded spandex under my jeans every time I ride
Sort of off topic but last night on my ride home from work a car full of dudes drove by me. The one in the front passenger seat stuck his head out the window and yelled "FIXED GEAR!!! YEAH! BIKES RULE!!!"
I have to wonder whether he was making fun of me. I really have no idea. I just sort of yelled back at him. I thought it was most interesting because I only know of two others in this town who ride fixed.
