I like Asleep at the Wheel, but I guess they're more Texas Swing.

Austin all the way. Bob Wills was from Dallas Fort Worth I think.
Gram Parsons is from the south (Georgia) and he was really the one that brought the country sound to California, if it wasn't for him the Eagles, Poco, et al wouldn't have ever happened. Check out the one Byrds album and the early Flying Burrito Brothers albums that Gram plays on for the origins of the Southern Hippie / California Country Sound. He did some solo albums with Emmy Lou Harris too.
Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen were another story altogether, they were sort of the hippie version of the Buck Owens Bakersfield sound. Lost in the Ozone and Live at the Armadillo are both great albums, IMO.
But I really think of the southern sound as the Macon Georgia sound, that's the Allman's, etc.; sort of a blend of blues, soul, country and jam. Skynyrd's thing was the multi-guitar attack, a tradition carried on by the Drive by Truckers, Kentucky Headhunters, etc.

Wow!
Three pages and no love for Govt Mule or The Black Crowes.
I grew up on The Allmans Brothers. I have to admit, im not much on the Dixie centric bands like Skynard and pretty much stay with the blues oriented bands from the south.

You guys are stretching "southern" and "rock" bigtime. Start with:
Allman
Skynard
.38 Special
[not]SRV
Definitely not the Eagles, ZZ, or CCR.

Stevie Ray Vaughan is not southern rock, he's Texas blues.

I second the motion for Gov't Mule, and the Crowes. Also, aren't the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies from "the South"?
Aside from that - just this very moment, I have gotten authorization to go to Lexington, Kentucky at the end of January for a week. Any good rock bands/blues bars there?

You better like basketball if you are going to spend any time in Kentucky or Indiana during January.

I think CCR is OK but Skynard.....Gag me with a Spoon !
I try to be open minded, even like some country whinery, but
the Skynard/Hatchet/38 Special genre makes me want to put my
ears out of their misery by Picasso-ing them with a rusty knife !

Seen SKYNYRD in 73 front row Detroit Mich. Ford Auditorium. Ronnie wears no shoes says he likes to feel the stage burn.Ive seen many concerts in the 70s but when you hear Freebird live its unbeleivable. They drank and smoked onstage.Check out Poison Whisky.

I've always felt basically the same way about Skynyrd, but recently I picked up "Southern Rock Opera" by the Drive-By Truckers. Great record, and it gave me a new appreciation for Skynyrd, though perhaps not enough to call myself a fan. At any rate, definitely worth a listen from start to finish if you get the chance. It's one of the most complete "concept albums" I've heard in a long, long time. (I didn't think anyone did concept albums anymore, and, besides, the mere thought of such an animal generally makes me cringe.)

I'm so glad that the DBTs did that record. I never had a problem reconciling my unabashed love for Skynyrd with my later punk rock leanings, but a lot of my friends did. Those guys were passionate about what they did and overcame a hell of a lot to achieve what they did. I think a lot of people are put off by some of the imagery (e.g. lots of Confederate flags) as well as the stereotype of the Skynyrd fan. Don't get me started on the current version of Skynyrd, though. Let's just say that the real Skynyrd died in that bayou in '77 and that Rickey Medlocke should have re-formed Blackfoot before Jakson Spires passed.
