I grew up on this stuff. In HS from 77-81, my older brother listened to Skynryd, The Allmans, Dickey Betts and Great Southern, Marshall Tucker Band (my favorite), The Outlaws (with the underrated Hughie Thomasson), New Riders of the Purple Sage (stoner southern rock), and the folksy Pure Prairie League. Oh, and also Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot, both of those being more "rock" than "southern". Some great music that many people will never hear.

My older brothers were very into the Southern Rock genre.
You can't go wrong with Skynyrd, and I liked Molly Hatchet, too (Flirtin' with Disaster)...
I also liked the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and Blackfoot.

Allman Brothers are one of my favorite bands (Dickey Betts is maybe my favorite guitarists).

That being said, I pretty much can't stand Lynard Skynard (I can't say that out loud though.....that would be blasphemy this far in the South).

Allman Brother's Band, yes, "Live at the Filmore East" with Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, man that is one jam album!! But the whole band was so tight, and Chuck Levell on piano was just amazing, note the piano work on the album Brother's and Sisters, especially thinking of the song Jessica, Levell and Betts made that song SMOKE!

North Mississippi All-Stars are putting out some nice work these days.

I'm with you on Skynard, too much of an alright thing, IMHO.

Dude, you can't be sayin that stuff this far north either! I imagine you have to hear the same old stuff all the time, rather than the best stuff they did, which doesn't get near enough play time. Tuesday's Gone, Comin Home, Simple Man, etc.

and it's LYNYRD SKYNYRD! My son lives down your way, gonna have to send him over to straighten your yankee butt out! :D

nrps, david nelson is one of my favorites, and what else needs to be said about the allmans, i'll listen to skynryd if i have to, but i tend to like it a bit more on the down and dirty side, with beats that make the ladies shake it.

last time i got arrested was at an allman bros show 3 yrs ago, campus cops came into the vip section to pull me out for smoking a joint, long story, funny now that i think about it, middle finger to those stupid racist pricks, but thanks for giving me my sheet of acid back it was in my wallet that you didn't search, i took the ticket for possession of marijuana under 1oz which when i went to pay the city couldn't find.

what about widespread panic? they represent the mix of southern rock splashed with a bit of jam band, add to that they're 'heads.

i've have some pretty good allman bros soundboards and can get many more if anyone is interested, but mind you it takes me quite some time to burn music and mail it out...

Shifty, I think I love you.

North Mississippi All-Stars are great. Hill Country Revue is a very good live album. They're definitely a blues band.

Allman Bros. are also definitely a blues outfit.

Molly Hatchet and Skynyrd are fun, but not as musically important I don't feel. Sweet Home Alabama may be the most overplayed song of all time. My brains may ooze out my ears next time I hear it. Give me Back My Bullets and Saturday Night Special are far better songs.

Little Feat is amazing. My Dad saw the Allmans and LF in concert a year or two back. Said the Allmans can still rock like nobody's business, but LF live now just isn't anything to get worked up about.

I've always liked CCR a lot. I really can't think of anything of theirs I don't like.

Widespread Panic is one of my favs. I HAVE to see them live soon. I missed them in DC this July and Charlottesville in September. They're live albums with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (actually there are two: A Joyous Occasion and Another Joyous Occasion) is AWESOME. Panic in the Streets/ Live at the GA Theatre are two good albums also. They're definitely influenced by the blues and jazz, but they seem capable of being all over the place musically.

Also, the Drive By Truckers are rather southern I believe. They're similar to WSP, but I haven't listened to them all that much.

If you like a talented guitarist look at Derek Trucks. He's Butch Trucks' (Allman Bros. drummer) nephew, I believe.Very young and talented guitarist. Definitely a blues guitarist also, I have one of his band's albums and I'm not super enthused about that, but his live shows are very good.

Wrinkle Neck Mules are a smaller group I really like. They're from Richmond and Charlottesville, VA and very good. They're rock/country/bluegrass and a lot of fun. I'm hoping to see them in Annapolis this December, but we'll see how the schedule looks.

:D I'm taking all the love I can get these days!! And the good recommendations you are dishing out!

On the CD Lyle Lovett, Live from Texas, there is a song by Francine Reed, "Wild Women Don't Get the Blues" check it out, oh, and leave plenty of room to dance around, it is HOT! Actually the whole CD is on fire, one of the best bands I've heard in a long time!!

I'm pretty sure that's the lone Skynyrd album I own, and Classic's right, it's very good.

I'd also like to tack on .38 Special w/ Skynyrd and Molly Hatchett as fun, but rather ephemeral and not really musically important. They're fun to listen to, but they're not quite as "southern" and more "borderline crappy 80's rock band", but I think they can still be thrown in here.

Yeah, Molly Hatchet is more towards heavy metal than Southern Rock. I think Danny Joe Brown's voice is what made them seem more 'southern' than they were. I saw them at Madison Square Garder leading up for Foghat (wow!), and all I can remember was it seemed like there were 40 guitar players for Molly Hatchet. Or maybe 50.
.38 Special was more a vehicle for Donnie Van Zandt, and then he got the bum's rush so that Donnie Barnes guy could sing all the hits.
No Marshall Tucker fans?? :(

Shifty,

How can you mention Texas without
Stevie Ray Vaughn & double trouble.
or The Fabulous thunderbirds ?

I was in the hospital (ER doing an assesment) when they
brought Lowell George after the Georgetown show.
I've always loved Feat and it was heartbreaking to me that
he died at such a young age.
Haven't heard anyone mention Sea Level in a long time,
great stuff.
How bout Pousette Dart Band? Kenny Butrell (sp?) got his start
there.
Georgia Satellites are another good southern rock band.
I have this aversion to Free Bird, I heard it so many times
in the dorms that I just about puke when I hear it now.

I'm so busted :o , it's funny I was listening to some Stevie Ray Vaughn tracks today, he was killin' those strings. Wasn't that his brother in the Thunderbirds? So many great Texas bands, it calls for a thread of it's own.

Must of been strange at that ER scene, Little Feat tried to get it back together, and I really liked some of the newer stuff, but Lowell George was irreplacable.

Thanks, the very humbled

songs about the south, are not a southern rock group.
They were from california.

Shifty, Yah Jimmy Vaughn was SRV's older brother.

shall we get very obscure?
Black Oak Arkansas
Southern Crusaders (more jazz though)
John Hiatt (not really rock but can't get more
southern).

Rare Southern records, they might be out of print, but definitely worth tracking down..

The Dixie Dregs ('what If', 'Night of the Living Dregs')
Anything by uber-guitarist Steve Morse, of the Dregs
Atlanta Rhythm Section ('Champagne Jam')
Black Oak Arkansas (Southern Glam-Rock)
Kansas, man, how in dee hell did ya'll forget KANSAS?!?

Johnny and Edgar Winters Albino blues MASTERS Johnny's killer gravel voice and breaking guitar strings, and Edgar on that Hammond B3.

I had the honor to see an all night jam with Johnny and BB King at Lake Dallas in 1969 after the Dallas Pop Festival ended up the road.

Sorry Serrendipper but
Kansas isn't southern rock, not in my book anywho.

Champagne Jam is one of my favourite LPs.

Saw Johnny Winter as headliner for show in philly
Al kooper, Buddy Miles, Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull and Winter
one of the best damned shows ever.
saw him again in DC area, small club man he can whip those
strings around.

Shifty

Yes Marty, sounds like the best damned show ever, what a line-up!

I think that Johnny Lang is from California, but I think anywhere south of the Mason Dixon line would claim him, great young talent.

Another west coast boy (22 years old) is David Jacob-Strain, check him out. He's a Junior at Stanford and just dynamite.

How in dee Hell can you say Kansas ain't Southern? 'Onward My Wayward Son'? Dust In The Wind? Before it was a TV Commercial theme?
Man, I've seen The Allman Bros. open up for Kansas w/ Steve Morse on lead guitar, and Dickie Betts playing rythmn. Warren Haynes and Greg were in the Audience during the Kansas set, watching everything go down, then hopped onstage for the Jam at the end w/O'teal on bass and Greg A. on keys, doin' 'Mellisa' and Jammin' out at the Variety Playhouse in Little Five Points. Trust Me. They got it honest.

So does Edgar winter, Howlin' Wolf, And Mastodon. And Old Crow Medicine Show.
David Ryan Harris is good. The Black Keys, and The White Stripes. Anything with a Sun Records Lable pretty much covers it, on my end. And Bo Diddly.

The first time I heard "freebird" (unedited) on the radio when I was like 13 or 14, I thought that song was the sh!t... But when I listened to it after becoming a music snob and found out that they used like 16 guitar tracks for the solo, that sorta ruined it for me. I also liked "sweet home alabama" but then I again, I made the mistake of actually listening to the lyrics -about "..the governer being true" and all that. I wish that never happened. The next southern rock type stuff I got into was the "texas blues" of SRV, but found out he pretty much ripped off Hendrix...so now, Hendrix it is.

Stevie Ray was without a doubt, THE best white blues player ever...and I mean that with ALL DUE RESPECT! I had never heard blues guitar played like that before, or since. I was in HS from '74-'78 and college until '82. I always loved The Allman Brothers and Molly Hatchet....a very guilty pleasure for a black kid in the '70s and early '80s...believe me.

My brother was into The Dixie Dregs, big time. We were 2 not so very "normal" black kids :D.

If I hear "Freebird" one more time I am going to gouge out my eyeballs with a guitar pick....I HATE THAT SONG!!! Actually I don't like the vast majority of what Skynyrd did. I always thought they were way over-rated.

And rtists "ripping off" other artists is nothing new in the music biz. At least SRV paid his homage to Jimi.
