I will not be putting a lot of miles on this bike but I am 200lbs. and will be carry a load on it when I go to the store. Are $25 tires better than $10 tires from Wal-Mart? Maybe touring tires. I really know little about this. I want a decent tire without buying just for the sake of saying I have XYZ on my bike. Thanks....Sam

I've had the walmart 26x1.5" tires. Don't bother. Spend $15 at performancebike, or even the same $10, and you'll get a better tire. Heck I'm riding on some 26x1.25's I got from performance on sale for $7 each a few months ago and they work great.

What are your riding goals. It all depends on what you are trying to do. Touring, commuting, trail riding, hard core single track, etc. What's your plan. My winter ride, SC Superlight, sports a pair of Specialized Nimbus. Great rolling and tough as nails.

If you want a durable tire that resists punctures but isn't horribly slow then get a decent touring tire and not a Walmart special. I like the Schwalbe Marathon Slick for decent speed with good protection. Schwalbe also makes the Marathon and Marathon Plus in 26" with increasing levels of protection. Also avoid knobbies unless alot of your riding is off road.

Take a look at the Panaracer Pasela TG... they run about $20 in the size you specified, and have low rolling resistance and good flat protection. The T-Serv is another good choice (it's what I use), but runs $10 or so higher.

And yes, they're substantially better than the $10 *mart tires.

I've had Ritchey Tom Slicks 26x1.4" on my commuting wheels for a couple of years now. I really like them. I think I got them for $15 each

My winter ride, SC Superlight, sports a pair of Specialized Nimbus. Great rolling and tough as nails.
My commuter's been rocking a pair of those for the last four years. I've got no complaints at all.

I just got some specialized nimbus...those things are a little on the rigid side compared to the serfas drifters I used in the past, but seem to be near indestructable.

The serfas drifter is essentially like a continental town&country, but costs less.

Another option is the Panaracer Cross Town; if you're looking for uber-flat resistance in the 26x1.5" size.

schwalbe marathons and big apples are wonderul.. usually about $60 a pair though... but kevlar is worth it.

or some new old stock's? Personally I dig the look of the new tread pattern (even though I know it's not important to the tire's function)
