Commuting - Commuting sub-forum for lighting?

There are a lot of useful posts about lighting here and in over in advocacy. The mods helpfully created a sticky, but I think a commuting sub-forum (like they have in the Road Cycling (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=41) section for racing) would be more helpful. A single sticky doesn't facilitate people discussing specific products or problems.

And, of course, Total Geekiness (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=42629) would be the top sticky in the sub-forum.

I put this here instead of in user assistance because I wanted the people who use this forum to have a chance to see the idea, argue about it, or ignore it as they see fit.

I'm in favor. I find the sticky threads to be worse than the problem they purport to solve.

BTW, I suggested this to the moderator a few months ago but she was opposed.

maybe, but tbh i think it's be a better fit in the mechanics section. Many different riders care about lighting not just commuters, and the information should be shared more widely.

besides all the "this should be in the lighting section" spam all lighting posts will get from then on.

I see your point. I suggested commuting because that's where the main interest is. I think the "spam" messages would just be asking people to post where it will be most useful. If all of the lighting threads were together, it would be easier for people to get the information they want. Now, the lighting questions are scattered over at least two forums.

Of course, if it's just DCCommuter and me who want the change, it won't happen.

It would be good to have it all together in one place.

Every type of cyclist may use a light.
Only one of about ten that I ride at night with is a commuter. I know lots of other places it would be the opposite.
It's not bike mechanics if you are not building your own light. even if you are it's not quite a bike.
Commuting may keep a newbie from finding it if they are not a commuter.
It's not advocacy, but it is safety. When I first started the forums I would not have thought that would be safety. I thought more about training, riding in traffic, that kind of thing.

OK .......by typing this I just convinced myself that it has to be General Cycling by default. The others are a little too specific.

Maybe someone could locate all the ligthing related threads and compile the links to them in one thread and one of the mods could make it a sticky.

You get too detailed and next thing you know, there's a forum for different tires, there's a materials science forum, etc etc.
I don't think there's so much out there that we need a sub-forum for it. It's just a lot of the same information regurgitated over and over again.

I'll work on one. Could you set it up so that the top post could be edited by more than one person? That way, people could improve add to it by putting a brief description. I guess the other alternative would be for people to PM me or a mod with proposed edits.

Search function works well to round up what you need on any one topic.

Except when it's in a thread with almost 1000 posts, like the "Total Geekiness" thread. That's why I don't think a sticky thread is the appropriate way of dealing with a topic that has archival value.

Also, the answers change as new products come on the market and old ones are discontinued.

We already have a winter forum....why sub forum?

My $.02: another yes vote for a lighting forum. It would be a convenient place to draw together several threads now in different forums. Many of these threads are long and have good information in them.

The forum might seem as if it would be narrow. In a sense it would. Many of the threads address just a few topics more than once: HID, HID vs. overvolted halogen, LED, blinkies, various lens tests, and price-per-performance issues.

But a lighting forum might also bring more focused discussion out of the woodwork: maximizing battery life, rechargers and their efficiency, reflectors, some questions about electronics, and so on. I think we would get more interesting product reviews, too.

So, I think it's a good idea.
