We just got some new ongaurd mini-u's in the shop that are the "tc" version, thin casing. "So they fit in your pocket better." They seem to have the same flat black steel u, but the shackle part looks a lot like the kryptonites but all black. Pretty nice, and impressive that actually listened to what people wanted.

why don't they make u-locks with square or hex shackles, like the chains? aren't those impossible to clip, unlike round shackles?

Got a pic? A quick look on onguard's site and a google search didn't turn anything up.

nothing is impossible to clip
and it's much much cheaper to make round than square

Older onguards had a square shackle; I'm still using one.

i thought thatt he previous onGuards were a small bit wider than kryptonite locks that made it a little bit easier to lock them to a standard city bike rack?

I have a pitbull mini; it doesn't fit in my back pocket so well, so I hang it from my belt. It goes like this:

-undo belt one notch
-tuck lock under belt (with the fat mechanism end sticking out, shackle OVER the pocket)
-tighten belt.

no problems so far.

Scroll down to the Onguard Brutes. I got my Brute MS from this website and it is a beast, its pretty heavy though. They started making their new models with a rounded shackle for some reason.

I am still stumped as to how people manage to get their U-locks in their back pockets. Is there some kind of hipster pant with a wide pocket that everybody's wearing? Is this what I get for being out of the loop?

are you refering to regular u-locks or minis? cause the kryptonite evolution mini fits right in all my back pockets. i think some girls might have problems due to smaller back pockets. ive never been able to fit an onguard on to any pockets. maybe this new one will solve that

Minis. I have an Onguard Bulldog Mini and there's no way I can get it into my back pocket. And I'm not a girl (nor a hipster in girl's pants), so that can't be it.

Maybe it's just my particular brand of lock. Or maybe I'm just dumb for riding in my Levis like a dork.

To get my onguard mini to fit in my back pocket, I had to cut the rubber casing off of the "U" part. I also ripped off the plastic casing. The lock looks 200 times better now and fits perfectly. I guess the only concern is if you're really worried about scratching or chipping your bike.

I did the same thing for the same reason.
Works great.
But I also recovered the U part in electrical tape to prevent scratching.

You guys that can't fit locks must be wearing your pants too tight. All of my Onguard minis fit into my back pocket, Bulldog and Pitbull. Or maybe I should just pull my pants up.....

I don't see why one would try to stuff a mini u lock into your back pocket, even if you could. It'd seem uncomfortable riding. Like slopvehicle mentioned, as long as you have a fairly durable belt, the lock will fit securely under your belt (inbetween the belt and pants). it hangs more vertically, and doesn't get in your ass' way.

The back pocket doesn't get it the way at all because when you ride you don't ride on your butt, you ride on your taint/chode/whatever.

My Onguard mini fits in my back pocket perfectly,no mods necessary. I don't even notice it on the bike. I'm always checking to make sure it hasn't fallen out.

can't say it enough: krypto mini is the best! and i haven't found a pocket that won't take it all the way yet!

It may be the best for carrying, but there is no way it is the best security-wise.

I like it, and use it everyday but that doesn't mean it's the best. It's the most convenient.

well, i think generally my bike is never locked up in one place long enough for anyone to steal it. even if i free lock it, i don't worry too much. no one's going to get very far packing a couriers free locked bike on their shoulder before another messenger sees them.

when i do know that my bike will be somewhere for a while, i bring a second lock.

I bought one of the 2006 OnGuard Bulldog Mini TC models yesterday. It is just what I need for running errands around the neighborhood. Because of the "TC" "thin case" around the cross-bar, the lock will easily fit into the small handlebar bags I have on most of my bikes. It also takes up very little space in a messenger-style bag.

It is so compact, that after you put it around the rear wheel and a steel post, there is no room for a crook to insert effective leverage tools. It is not as tough as the Kryptonite New York lock or the OnGuard Brute, but works perfectly as a lock for use during the day in "safe" neighborhoods, or when you will only be locking up your bike for brief amounts of time.

A second small "upgrade". The top of the 2005 model OnGuard key was a very fat piece of plastic. When you put two or three of them on a keyring, they were very bulky. The new key has a slimmer plastic grip, and fits in your pocket a bit better.

I bought one 3 months ago. What I liked was that QBP only charges like $12 for them.

The thin casing moves around a good bit like krypto's always have. This causes the casing to get in the way of the key hole sometimes. One thing to watch out for with these is to make sure your key is all of the way in before you turn... Ive getten really frustrated with jams when the key was sort of half in.

Jnco jeans don't count...although you do get extra 90's style points ;)

You could fit a dead hooker in the back pockets of these babies

your systems fails to account for bike theives that don't travel on foot. If you can kidnap a kid kicking and screaming, you can take a free locked bike

Getting it in your back pocket is part of the breaking in process (of your jeans), just like acid washing.
Just keep pushing it in, and it will fit, you can even do it with damp jeans out of the dryer a little early.
Once in, go ride a bit, run around your house, do pilates, jazzersize, what ever you want to stretch your jeans.

Soon it will slide in perfect, even when dry.

and no I can't even feel it when ridding, and I have never ever had it even come close to falling out.
If your not using a hardened chain, it is the way to go
