It looks like I'm going to have to pick up a front brake. Somehow the caliper that my cousin was going to give me got lost. What size/reach brake should I be looking for for my Mark V? Also, I'd appreciate any advice on what model I should get, and an online retailer I can find it at. Ideally I'd just like to buy a single caliper. Thanks in advance.

If it is the new straight blade fork, it will need a long reach brake. If curved, I think the same.

Is that a Raleigh Super Course Mark V or something else?

you're going to want a long reach caliper. I bought a current generation Sora brake and it didnt have enough reach. One pad would rub the tire. My remedy? Cut half the brake block off so it wouldn't rub.

I run brakeless now so I dont have that problem.

So far I've really enjoyed riding brakeless - it's liberating and exciting. However, I routinely come across a couple of steep hills that run down into busy intersections. I'll probably get better at coming to a complete stop in time (since I've been riding fixed for a grand total of 3 days). However, I don't think I will ever run brakeless while I'm frequenting major streets in Boston at night. I'll always have a brake for the off chance that it would prevent me from getting killed or seriously injured.

If you're looking to cheap out, roll on over to Broadway Bicycle School at 351 Broadway in Cambridge and pick through the used bins. Can't go wrong. That's what I did and it's served me well, despite being a rear brake.

broadway is awesome, i've been there several times. as i am looking to cheap out, i'll likely try and get over there wednesday morning. that is unless riding the t for two more days causes me to take my own life.
