And if, Golf isn't a sport, then where is Frolf classified?

I think you mean Ultimate Frisbee , " Ultimate is a refreshing reminder of what sport was ment to be and on a rare occation still can be" My high school is #1 in the nation, maybe because there are barely any schools with Ultimate teams.

I've never thought sedentary sports constitute great athletes. My neighbor is huge into NASCAR and golf and I equate Nascar to people with incredible stamina - as in being able to withstand G's and hours of racing - with great hand, eye, feet coordination similar to video game players. Come on how can a guy be an incredible athlete well into their 50's in NASCAR? Same with golf. My take is cycling is 75% physical and 25% mental, while golf is the opposite. Maybe we could call them mental athletes....
All athletes play sports but not every sport has athletes. I don't consider a golfer an athlete but I do consider golf a sport.
It's a matter of degree; at what level of energy output does one become an athlete? That can be argued on till the cows come home.
Football player? Athlete
Track runner? Athlete
Bowler? ???
OCP? ???

Ultimate Frisbee, love that game! I played at Tuscaloosa for the "Forcing Physics"(meaning shift the defense towards the Physics building next to the Quad), Quad Squad, B.O.B. (beasts of bourbon), Intercepting Fist. We had a killer zone defense one year.
I could probably out lift out run and out box Tiger Woods. He is great at his game but he is not one of this worlds greatest athletes.
Did you know tiger was the strongest althlete, pound for pound, at stanford while he was there. I believe it was based on bench press reps of body weight.
Just an FYI
Still, he is no Jim thorpe

For all of you in the "Golf is for sissies" hater crowd. You would be amazed at how many of the Pro riders that you idolize hit the links. Event has played with a few.
For me there is no comparison. Golf about $1000 into equipment, $600 per year for unlimited greens fees. Play a Wed league and a Sunday am Skins. Cycling $2500 Road Bike, $1800 Track Bike, $2200 Pursuit Bike, $3000 or so in wheels, wont even get into clothing, ect. Raced 20 to 30 weekends per year, travel at least $100 per weekend.

I look at it simply like this. A club fee for golfing per year at our local private club is $5,000.00/yr. That does not include the cost of your clubs, and golf clothing which can be just as expensive as cycling gear.
I actually figured it out once, since I also like to play golf. My local course which is a cheap course, charges a $26 green fee with a cart. That's pretty cheap. Now, my clubs were only $500. But, my friends clubs were a $1700.00 Nike set. That is equal to the cost of a good bike. Anyway, for the cost of gas to go the course, the fees, the beer and food afterward...
It came to about $50/day for golfing or more, not including the gear. For the avid golfer, golfing the equivalent of a cyclist, about 3 times a week, it was costing me almost $150 per week to play golf.
That was about $7500 per year just to avidly play golf, including lots of indoor range time in the winter. That does not include the cost of my equipment either.
I honestly don't spend anywhere near that on cycling. Yet I go out cycling 3-4 times a week, just like an avid golfer. I could build two high end carbon bikes per year for that much money.
Now Macha made a good point. She goes to lots of international events. So, ,here investment is extensive.
However, imagine if you went to the same number of high priced international golfing events, camps, retreats, etc. Some of those secluded golfing retreats can be up to $10,000 each. I like golf, but I won't pay $10,000 to go on a secluded retreat.
Sorry, but when directly compared, cycling is cheaper.

I've done alright for myself ;) (and dont race anymore). Just trying to point out that if you want to look at the "Sport" of cycling as many here are, and if you are not significantly sponsored, then you are going to be a very financially poor person. That and having time for nothing else were finally too much for me.
I can Golf, be moderatly competitive and not have it be all consuming financially and from a time standpoint.

Wow, $5000, Im sure if I looked around here I could find much more expensive. I beleive Oakland Hills is 5 figures or so, plus dues, plus greens fees, locker room, ect. But you can play much cheaper.
Im currently paying $600 per yr.

Forget exclusive country clubs.. Figure an avid golfer who plays 2 rounds a week
40.00 for green fees per round
10.00 Lunch or Beverages per round
10.00 Sleeve of Premium Balls
So playing 2 rounds per week, not counting range balls, gloves - bag - new clubs will cost over $6000.00 per year.. Most courses her in so. cal are between 30.00 to 80.00 to play with nicer courses easily costing 120.00 +..
I use to play quite a bit and now play about once a month with some friends.. Cycling after your initial investment is much cheaper...
