Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - What's in your pants?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I usually ride in lycra. However, here in 'small town USA' I feel out of place running into the post office in my form-fitting shorts. I like boxers & I've tried tighty whiteys, but neither are keeping my 'equipment' out of the way.
Lots of male folks on this forum are wearing normal shorts/knickers/pants while out on the bike. So, what's in your pants to keep the ol' twig & berries under control?
everyone who was at the meat and greet now knows that i wear the ****ing **** out of some briefs and hotpant(ie)s. they do the job, but i recommend not riding in the wet in only underwear. chafe-deluxe.

No one really wants to see my fat a$$ in lycra anymore so I usually wear baggy MTB shorts or just wear regular shorts over my lycra.

why not wear the bike shorts under your jeans/shorts/hotpants?
i don't like the way that bike shorts feel if i'm going to be doing something other than riding. that is, i don't want to wear them if i have to go to class, am getting drunk, buying groceries, etc.

i just roll in jeans or regular pants. my tighter jeans cause uncomfortable manipulation of the nizzuts so i don't like to wear those unless i'm just going straight to work or the store. if i'm going for some longer all day ride or whetever then cycle shorts under the jeans. otherwise the usual boxer or commando set-up.
someone should make jeans with chammy though

I've got some of the 'bike underwear' It's really just lightweight bike shorts.

another opt. ive used under normal shorts are some old triathalon shorts - lycra with a teeny-tiny thin chammy in them, just enough to avoid chafing but not so much that you feel like you're wearing a diaper (unless that's your thing...)

No that's not a U lock. I'm just happy to see you.
Army surplus pants. They are good because the seam doesn't go throught the crotch area and chafe the boyos. The seam goes around in the back. That works for me.

Yeah, when it comes to riding in regular drawers (boxers, in my case), it's all about the baggy pants. Also, it's important not to have a belt that cuts into your gut when you're hunched over for riding purposes. Also, you get good support *and* look tough if you keep one hand on the bars and one hand clutching your crotch at all times.

riding in regular boxers has always been unbearable for me. after i've ridden for a few minutes it feels like they're trying to crawl their way out of the back of my pants, but then again i wear tight pants so to each their own... I do second the under armour though that stuff is great. I've also got some armour knockoff stuff from target that's pretty nice as well. Cheers.
I have never been able to figure this one out. Every option ends up being uncomfortable in its own way. If its anything over 20-30 miles its the bike shorts all the way. Otherwise... I am on the fence as to wether the allowing the john thomas the freedom to move and find a good location in boxers or securing everything with under armor type drawers is the best.

more important than getting the boys out of the way (accomplished in my case by a simple mounting procedure that shifts them forward and up--baggy pants and boxers) is keeping the area between the boys house and the black hole from getting too much pressure. I usually end up riding one cheek at a time on the ridge, unless I'm spinning fast and enough pressure is off the vein-zone.

boxer breifs, one size too small
My taint has grown accustomed to my saddle well enough that this works just fine on any ride under twenty miles...
problem is that it's a really old saddle that needs to be retired, but I can't find a replacement anywhere.

after the first two days of commuting to school for the first time in years (~two years ago), i thought that i would need to wear chamois all the time, even for those 5 mile rides. i immediately bought 3 pairs of those under-shorts chamois, thinking i would be wearing them every day. and at first i did. but after a couple weeks i stopped, and my body adjusted to the saddle. now i only wear them for long rides.

I commute in standard lycra with non-work pants over them for modesty, and because I have to change into work clothes when I get there anyways. Short trips around town deserve no protection; just undies in the pants. Long rides warrant lycra.
I have tried my tri shorts and they work well too for preventing the diaper-feel. Highly recommended.

Re: my dude and his bros ...
I tweaked my saddle position yesterday and on the ride home found myself intimately aware of my dude being shifting from side to side as I pedaled. It was one of the most distracting things I've ever experienced.
Soo ... the saddle's getting adjusted again today. Boxers + rolled up jeans, btw.

regular docker type cotton pants work well for me if you dont mind looking like a preppy or a yuppie depending on how old you are. wear with boxers and your frank and beans with slide around like they were on ice. no discomfort for me

dag...is it that much science?....I wear whatever....if I'm wearing boxers I have to be a lot more careful of getting in and out of the saddle, and moving around on it, but...otherwise....briefs (tighties), boxerbriefs....do the job well

Boxers/jeans in the winter, possibly with long johns if it's under 10F.
Boxers/ shorts in the summer.
I rode 65 miles in the summer, cotton boxers, cotton shorts. No chafing/discomfort/saddle sores.
I do own one pair of bike shorts if I wan't go go all lycra-y for a ride.

Granny panties huh?
One thing you might be getting from this is that many guys make an overly big deal over their "parts" I've ridden everything from hard plastic BMX seats to Avocet Touring saddles with most any kind of undies or lack thereof. he only time I worry about my parts is when they start to go numb which can be fixed by adjusting the saddle angle, but NOT by changing my undies. I am not overly or underly endowed, but I don't find I have trouble getting the dangly bits out of the way to sit on a bike seat. Bike seats were designed by men for men. These guys are just getting their "panties in a bunch" because they want an excuse to talk about their crotchal extremeties. :P

I wear the lycra for my ride, but then when I get near work and then when leaving, I put on a pair of wind pants. Works good for running errands, getting haircut, etc.
