Tandem Cycling - First Century Completed!

I only saw about 4 other tandems (any forum members???) at the Cruisin' In The Country century in Claxton, GA (fruitcake capital of the world) this past weekend. This was our first century together on a tandem, and my stoker's first century ever. We were very pleased to get our embroidered "Century Club" ball caps! :D

Congrats! We bought our tandem too late in the season to finish a century this year, so we're waiting for the spring, but we just bought up a bunch of warm clothes for some cold-weather training...

Beware. Going long on the tandem is addicting. A century or two may seem like harmless fun, but pretty soon you'll catch yourselves daydreaming about double centuries and brevets. Your Sunday rides will start at dawn and last 'til after dark. Friends and co-workers will begin to wonder why they don't see you anymore. Family members and spiritual advisors may try interventions. You'll tell yourselves you can quit anytime, but a weekend without at least 100 miles on the tandem will begin to seem empty somehow. You'll come to consider Tandemgeek's technical discussions of tandem characteristics and tables of tandem specifications as compelling reading - and, instead of arguing about the dishes, the two of you will argue about the merits of CoMo v. Santana frame geometery after dinner. You'll have a favorite tandem wheel hub and be prepared to give a detailed defense of its merits v. all other hubs at any time. You'll spend more time on this forum than you do on your actual work .....

Congrats to you folks. As one half of a very out of shape team, this is another incentive to get in shape by the spring. Circumstances kept us off our tandem all summer and our 40 miles of training rides this weekend left us somewhat breathless and a bit sore. We will be going back for more. We will do a century next year.

Out for a 25 mile tandem toot today in Tucson and saw 2 other tandem teams. On the Tumcacori Century last month saw at least a half dozen twicers.

Hey Zonker, I also did the Claxton Century but on a *road bike*. I saw the tandems out on the roads though. I even saw one tandem recumbent. What a wonderful job the Claxton people do for that ride. I might be able to sucker my wife into doing that ride with me next year on a tandem. She doesn't ride at all and the original talk was of her getting a road bike, but I think we'd have more fun on a tandem. That way she wouldn't have to wait up for me! Congrats on the century, now you guys can shoot for the Brasstown Bald century next Spring.

We just finished our first century as well (although it took a little over a month). Over our first 4-5 rides, we've covered 100 miles now! We are definitely loving it and I hope that our mileage will increase so that eventually we do a century in one day!

Were the ball caps included with the ride, or is that something you did on your own?

If it was included, we clearly need to go to rides with better schwag. :)

Yes the ballcaps were included for everyone who finished the century. The other schwag item was a windshirt. I saw where that came in pretty handy for a few of the riders because it was cold at the start. I'm with you on the better schwag. I'd just as soon have a pair of logo socks. I don't know if you can find a better organized ride. I'm going to add the Claxton century to my annual list of things to do.
