Commuting - Slide bike under car or crash into car - pick one

This morning I did yet another dumb thing.

I took a quiet suburban corner too fast, the road was wet and I made a lazy turn only to realize a car is coming towards me in the road I just turned into. Brakes! back tyre skids and rear end drifts forward. In a split second I decide that to crash into the car while riding is better than sliding on the ground towards the car, so I release the brakes and go straight into the car's driving space. Fortunately for me the driver saw me and stopped in time. I stop next to the car (between the car and kerb facing the wrong way!!), smile relieved and friendly, but that was a wasted effort, the front of the car was filled to capacity by 2 grossly overweight ladies glaring at me and trying to shrivel me with their gaze. Luckily I remained unshrivelled. :p

I'd just slide into the curb.
I'm surprised the car managed to stop while carrying so much momentum..

One can sometimes kick away from the bike and escape the car tires. I did this, ended up with tire marks along one leg as I rolled away. Bike crushed, but not me.

What he needs is an ejection seat... better not buy one of those ultra skinny racing saddles... that'll just end up jammed up your crack..

At least the lady was able to lift her fat leg to save your life. I wouldn't concentrate on how overweight they were when you were the one that almost caused the accident.

I always choose over the top to sliding underneath, at least that gives me a chance to go thru the windscreen and take the driver with me ;)

So, did you get their number? nuthin wrong with fat chics, so long as yer mates don't find out :p

Because over here, the bigs ones eat the little ones. Jur was lucky to escape.

I'd definitely prefer smashing in to a moving car to sliding under it. Sure, you can get hurt hitting a car, but there are few things worse than having a wheel roll over you.

It didn't matter, of course. "Not that there's anything wrong with that." It's just that these 2 ladies somehow managed to look more severe sitting like that all molded in the front, with faces sloping down smoothly into chests and bellies. :D

I once did the exact same thing. Except it was on a motorcycle, and neither one of us could stop. I planted my month old Ducati into the grill of a Cougar. I jumped straight up at the time of impact and was sommersaulted over the roof of the car landing flat on my back in the street. My helmet was cracked and my clothes were torn, but I had no injuries. The lady driving the car was clearly more shaken than me. She thought she had killed me. After 2 more accidents I sold the motorcycle.

I saw that! And then Hyacinth got out of the car and went over to you and said, "Paisley... with those trousers?" I mean seriously, what were you thinking? Gingham would have been much more appropriate.

Considering this happened in 1969 I could have been wearing paisley. However I vote for jumping over rather than sliding under.

Well I have done both. In general I use the kung-foo series theory of bike wrecking:

Better to avoid than hit, better to stop than slide under, better to slide (without going under), than side swipe, better to side swipe, than t-bone, better to t-bone then head on.

I would probably head for the hood. With minimal effort, you can lift off the bike, roll on the hood, and be mostly undamaged. Having been hit by a few cars, I know this technique works on foot anyway.

Maybe non-PC to say that. But the fact remains, unfit people have limited mobility, as in turning their heads around to check something out. And obese folks will generally require a full open doorway and are used to just pushing the door out to max. Add to this some carbo-drunkenness from a Krispy-Kreme run, and you have all the elements of a dooring condition.

Considering Jur was riding against traffic directly at a moving car and that he almost doored himself, the driver's weight and lack of fitness is not a question in this case as the driver was fit enough to hoist her fat leg off the gas and onto the brake and stop the car before Jur could go through with the dooring or hood kissing.

I'm glad he's ok and hope he'll take it easy on slick turns in the future. Meanwhile, the two women might have been glaring at him for doing something spectacularly stupid that could've cost him his life. Like the man said:

I'm all for the bunnyhop and fastplant off the fender option.

Are reflexes sufficiently fast to actually make a choice? Or, is the reaction reflexive? If I had a choice, I'd choose the option you ended up taking. Have the car stop with me between it and the curb and still upright.
