Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Stripped lockring theads on ENO

So....I just stripped my ENO hub. I had a 15t cog on and was putting the 18t back on. I had the cog on and tightened down and was putting on the lockring. Screwed it on, tightened it down....and it just kept turning. Took it off and the threads on the hub are gone.

It wasn't cross-threaded, everything has always been tightened down properly in the past - never had any slippage issues. It's a White Industries hub and a Dura Ace lockring.

oh no. this is not suppsoed to happen. this was on my "buy within the year" list... f*ck.

Let me state this before this goes too far:

This in no way changes my opinion that the quality of this hub is first-rate and on par with anything else on the market. It is a fantastic piece of gear and I stand behind it. This is a fluke, I am sure, and I don't want to scare anyone away from it. I'm just mystified and bummed, that is all.

This, and the Pro Max thread, just go to show that even the best parts can have 1 faulty unit.
There has to be some sort of warrenty or something you can utilize.
Bike people just seem too nice and understanding to let that happen without replacing the obviously faulty hub.

I have heard a few acounts of the ENO hub's lockring stripping on another forum, a year or two ago, when the ENO hub was still a relatively new product.

You're a good man and all (I'm all for rocking it singlespeed), but this is the most depressing sounding post I've read in a while.

call them up and calmly explain the situation. Ask them if there's any way they might be able to help you get back on your feet(?) again sometime soon being that you love their product but just don't have the cash to replace it at this time. From what I've heard they're a great company and a precision machine shop. Places like that often stand behind their work above and beyond what most other places do.

Sorry to hear about your hub. I lost a high $$$ hub this spring when the axle bolts pulled the threads out of the hub body.

This reminds me about my original idea of having a wheel for each gear, instead of screwing around with different gears.

Word. Even if they don't have an expressly stated warranty, White Industries puts out good stuff, and I'd bet that they will stand behind it. Also, maybe if you just ask for a hub body, that would be a little easier for them to accommodate.

I've heard of IRO, Paul, and Phil all taking care of people who had stripped hubs. Why wouldn't White Ind?

I haven't managed to strip my Level Hub yet. If you have the means, do it.

I ride with New Guy every (work)day. I have seen him skid pretty fooking hard, and he doesn't have a lockring. That seems to me to indicate that the Italian Method is a viable option.

I have heard an ex-world champ track pro (Shaun Wallace) tell me personally not to run a lockring on the track. He said that the cogs never spin off anyway, unless you are wrecking. In which case it can prevent (further) injury.

The manufacturer was very forthcoming--the affected parts, replaced gratis.

just ordered my ENO hub today, along with their kick ass freewheel. waiting till jan to get the MI5 front hub to match. they even do employee purchase, which is uncommon for high end stuff. cant wait!

This warranty applies to all products sold by an authorized White Industries Dealer to the original owner. It covers any and all material workmanship defects for one year from the date of purchase. Bearings are the exception, and are warranted for 60 days from the date of purchase. With proper maintenance the bearings should last much longer.

WHAT IS NOT COVERED:

1) Normal wear and tear.
2) Damage, or failure caused by misuse, accident , or improper assembly or installation,
3) Parts subjected to use not consistent with the use originally intended for the product.

All warranties are void if the product is subject to abuse, user alteration, or crash damage. Radial lacing voids warranty.
