Right now i have a rocky mountain soul. I really like the way the frame fits me. I was thinking of changing the tires to something a little wider witha less agressive tread and the handle bars to the ones on a street bike.( sorry the proper term slipped my head.) can anyone see a problem withthis

It's been done before.Road bar(drops) and mtb stem clamps usually don't match.Bar end shifters sidestep some other problems.Possible issues with brakes and road lever compatibility.

What are you trying to achieve? A roadified MTB, a trekking bike for mixed road/off-road touring? something else?

It was just an idea I have had in my head for awhile. I was just throwing it out there to see if there was any complication that I may have not considered.

There have been numerous threads on various aspects of conversion/upgrade, especially shifter/derailleur compatibility. See the thread on bizarre hybrid. Browse through the archives. Also go to Sheldonbrown.com to read a variety of articles on gears, shifters, brakes, upgrades, etc. People do the sort of thing you are describing.

Some of the pioneers of mountain biking used drops, and I do not see a problem with doing so. I like the variety of positions afforded by drops, and I experience very little hand/wrist numbness or discomfort when I ride my road bikes, but a little when I ride my mountain bike. I also find most mountain bike handlebars uncomfortably wide.

There is an article in the current Rivendell reader about a chap still using them. Many probably still do.Riv use to promote their all arounder for a similar setup.
