On a threadless, I get that the stem locks down onto fork & secures the fork (vs. threaded where a nut does such).


If your stem & frame has gyro stems built in, then what?

Do you use just a center part?

I'm lost. I've got a gyro/threadless on my Haro, so I don't understand your question.

Yes, just use the actual bearing unit, you can toss the modular tabs. Or save them for a frame / stem that doesn't have tabs built in.

Does the part, on left of above pic, slide over spacers? When I mention slide, I mean the center part where the cables come to an end. Gyro tabs built on to the frame are rigid & don't move (up & down, only moves in same direction as frame). If a stem has them on it, they don't move (up & down, only moves same direction as stem). The center part (part that spins) has to slide up & down on something, & if on a threadless, there's no nut to hold the headset in place. I've seen gyro add ons that includes a center sleeve for spacing the stem away from the headset, but allows the stem to do it's clamping to the fork & onto the top of the headset.

Also, does anyone make a hollow bolt for a threadless headset that locks to the top cap/star nut, to allow a brake cable to go through the fork, so you can have front and rear brakes, but no cable tangles?

Yes, you can get the top cap at any decent bike shop.

What about a no tangle front brake cable solution for the threadless fork/stem design? Something hollow & possibly replaces the star nut design?

Try ebay. Freestyle top cap or something similar.

I got a 4 or 6 pack of them on ebay for about $8. But they're at my dad's house as I don't know what I'll use them for over here.

If he's got a standard star nut in there, just the bolt won't do...he'll need the star nut with the larger diameter hollow compression bolt and top cap to go with it.

Indeed, I should have made that a bit clearer. All top caps have a hole in them.

I'm going to build a bike. Buy all the parts I want for the bike, rather than some cookie cutter complete bike, with possible corner cutting components.

It would be cheaper than a MTB that could take the same amount of punishment.

I'll start a thread that shows the progress of the build...w/pics too. It will start after Christmas (got a family to think of 1st).

Tell them not to get you anything for Christmas, the bike you build yourself will be gift enough. That's the way I've been doing it in my house. Hard to justify anything for Christmas when 5 new bikes have come into the house this year.
