BEIJING - China reported its first human cases of bird flu on the mainland Wednesday, including at least one fatality, as health workers armed with vaccine and disinfectant raced to inoculate billions of chickens and other poultry in a massive campaign to contain the virus.

The World Health Organization confirmed the virulent strain experts fear could cause a worldwide flu pandemic has now infected humans in the world's most populous nation.
China's Health Ministry reported confirmed cases of infection with the deadly H5N1 strain in a poultry worker, who died, and a 9-year-old boy, who fell ill in central Hunan province but recovered, the official Xinhua News Agency said. It said the boy's 12-year-old sister, who died, was recorded as a suspected case.

Ooooo another SAR's Better line up for the plastic sheeting & duct tape. :p

I'm sorry, a couple of cases (in China no less) does not an epidemic make... much less a pandemic.

Is it wrong for me to think that if you pack 1 billion people in a certain area with less then 3rd world living conditions and then you get an epidemic - that its kind of asking for it?

Sounds like a typical "bordering racist" response. Every country that isn't the U.S. is a 3rd world country, right?

China may have some 3rd world type conditions in certain areas (the same argument could be made for the U.S.).....but it is not exactly a 3rd world country. Ever seen Hong Kong?

But considering the only thing that needed to happen (that had/has everybody so scared) is the ability for the virus to makes it way to humans.....

Now that it has attacked a human, it could now start spreading.

I could be no huge deal....it maybe could be. I just thought it was "news worthy".

Firstly I do not consider myself to be redenck by any means :p
Second of all even though My name has Texas, i've been living here for a few years and I am still 75% Yankee :p

Third of all I never said it was a 3rd world country. I said "3rd world living conditions."

I am sorry but everything over there screams of 3rd world country. I don't consider "3rd world country" to be a matter of how rich everybody is but the type of life style people lead as it relates to sanitation, hygeine. .

And I never said "asking for it" as in, "they deserved it" I said asking for it - like if you wet your bed or eat in your bed then you're asking for lice or other bug problems. You may or may not deserve it - but you are still asking for it as in, 'its very liable to happen'.

Oh, that and trave across a couple of thousand of miles of open ocean. Infect more than a mere handfull of people... Yes, then if COULD become a situation.

The problem is The feds, media and just about every one else is talking about this for the past couple of months like it's knocking on our front door. Reality, it's not... if it happens, it's still a ways off. IMHO, it's the "Scare Du Jour", This Weeks Monster... call it what you will. At this point it hype, and I'm not stocking up on plastic sheeting, zinc tablets or whatever the deem the 'Magic Bullet" to be. Not just yet. :D

In a situation like this, it causes an adverse immune system response to your own body.
So the proper way to fight it is to weaken your immune system, either by riding a century in 30 degree weather in shorts and a jersey or taking some kind of immune suppressant and spending a few days in the hospital.

I opt for the former...
