I've got a mid-80s (?) Japanese-made Bianchi Grizzly that I commute and tool around on. Lately, when I put some force into pedaling -- not mashing, but maybe 1/2 to 2/3 max effort on the pedal -- I feel an odd vibration. There doesn't seem to be any noise, but the vibrations are really quite irritating when I pedal. Is it the bottom bracket? I don't know what else could cause such weird vibes (except absinthe, maybe).

Well, have you checked to see if anything is loose?

I had a similar problem, thought it was a bad freewheel, turned out the chain was worn, new chain, problem went away. Check to if there is play in the bottom bracket or rear hub.
