View Full Version : Nashbar Studded Is Kenda Klondike
It looks like to me that the Nashbar studded tire (http://www.nashbar.com/profile_moreimages.cfm?category=&subcategory=&sku=10627&brand=) is actually the Kenda Klondike. (http://www.bikemannetwork.com/biking/p/TR5308)
I have the Nashbar tires and i never knew this before. I knew they were made by Kenda but I didn't know they were also sold as a Kenda Klondike. According to the bikeman website, these tires have a carbide tip. I did not know this?
See the following quote:
Kenda's new studded tires feature a special polymer body carbide tip that retracts with use to provide longer life.

I'm using a pair on my CX bike, I think the 35 width on these is marginal in loose or uneven snow with any depth, they are ok for icey pavement. Nice price. I'm hunting for something wider with more studs in 700c, supposedly Peter Whats-His-Name has the Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 in stock at $75 each but he only likes telephone orders and I haven't been able to coordinate my schedule with New Hampshire time zone. . .or is it Vermont? Has anyone tried the W240s in 700c?
Is nobody else suprised that these are carbide tipped? Isn't that supposed to be the selling point of the Nokians? These are considerably cheaper and if they both have carbide studs....? Maybe the key is "tipped". Maybe they arent' completely carbide?

I am still not sure the nashbars are carbided.. have my doubts.. the older ones were not.. maybe the new ones are different.. mine are like these http://www.icebike.org/Equipment/nstud.htm
also, I got mine thru amazon.com cheaper than I could from nashbar... they would not match the price on their own tires..

that may be the difference.. they are made by kendar for nashbar.. and are cheaper.. probably because they use steel instead of carbide.. but still for under $50 the kendars look like a good alternative to the higher price guys if you want carbide... for me, for now the even cheaper nashbars are doing fine with steel for another $10 cheaper.. here is the technical spec section from nashbar:
THESE TIRES HAVE EXACTLY 170 STUDS
use ----------- ATB
tread --------- Knobby w/steel studs molded into tread
weight -------- 994g (tec)
pressure ------ 40 - 65 psi
bead type ----- wire bead
TPI -----------
sidewall ------ blackwall

I'm leaning towards believing the Nashbars do have carbide studs, due to the fact that the set I ran last year show no signs of rust, while a pair of Innovas I have on another bike are very noticeably rusted.

Something doesn't add up here. The nashbar page says it has 168 studs. I haven't counted mine but i am pretty sure mine are the tire listed, because i just got them late last winter. As i showed, they say have CARBIDE TIPPED studs.

if your nashbars say carbide then they must be.. the spec section i posted there was from their website tho.. no tellin which is which.. would have to call them.. i got mine about this time last year... I dont know how many studds they have whout counting.. and I don't really know if they are carbide or not.. would be nice if they were.. I have to say I haven't noticed any wear on them but I only put about 600 miles on them over the winter...

it wouldn't surprise me tho if kendar made them for nashbar using steel instead of carbide for the nashbar tires to have a competitive advantage over them with the klondike etc..
This is the response that i got from Kenda. I really doesn't answer my questions because my tire says Kenda and has the little cursive N symbol that means nashbar. What is a hotpatch? Heck if I know...
From Kenda:
Thanks for your email; regarding your question about studded tires, does the hotpatch on the tire sidewall say "Nashbar" or "Kenda"? If you purchased the Kenda Klondike tires through Nashbar they have carbide tipped studs. Carbide is steel, but a much harder version for longer wear life. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Take care..............Mike

I have the same thing.. looks like maybe hot patch may mean the name that that looks stamped or molded into the rubber.. vs the the nashbar or klondike labels that looks like they are glued or painted on after the build... so mine say the same.. kendar in rubber.. and nashbar swoosh-N(sorry Nike) added later.. maybe we shoot a note to nashbar as ask them.. you have me curious now.. these are already good tires for the money, if they are carbide they are a great deal..

I replied to Mike at Kenda and am awaiting his reply. I doubt that Nashbar would know but might be worth a shot. I guess, it is important to me because i was thinking of getting at least one Nokian Mount and ground to run on the bike with one of the Nashbar tires.
Would be sort of redundant if the Nashbars already have carbide tipped studs.
UPDATE
These Nashbar studded tires ARE carbide tipped. FYI.
Here is the latest email from Kenda:
They are the Kenda Klondike tires with the Nashbar logo on the sidewall. The studs are carbide tipped. Take care and have a Happy Thanksgiving.............Mike

interesting.. I got a note back from Nashbar technical support assurng they were not.. one of them is misinformed.. I would rather beleive Kendar....but have my doubts...the icebike comparison called them steel, but no telling how long ago that was.. they could have changed by now..http://www.icebike.org/Equipment/StudQuality.htm
I described the appearance of the tire too him and he works for the company that manufactures the tire. I'll take his word over that of Nashbar's. All they do is stick their little swoosh on the side and sell it, like so many other products they sell.

After reading this. I’m going to save my rear 294 Nokian and change it out for the Nashbar studded tire. I’ll save the 294 for very ice covered roads and frozen lake rides.
Ranger, good work!
Thanks
Johnny
Sounds like a good idea. I picked up my Nashbar tires when they were on sale for $27 last Dec. Not sure if they will go on sale again or not but...
I have thinking about getting a Nokian Extreme or Mount & Ground to run on the front this year. No real reason other than i like to dabble.
I have heard of parts being labeled using a hot stamp and I am guessing that is what the hot patch is. The "N" sounds like it would be the hot patch. The Kenda name is molded into the rubber by the mold and they probably only have one mold so it would be on all the tires unless they have an interchangeable insert for the logo area. I don't think carbide is a steel either. Usually when someone says carbide they are referring to tungsten carbide which is made up of mostly carbon and tungsten. To be steel it would have to have iron in it.

Carbide, in this context, is not steel. Carbide is a metal-carbon compound like tungsten carbide or silicon carbide. In use the extremely hard carbide grains are cemented or held together by a binding agent like cobalt. The carbides resist wear and the bonding agent holds them together and braces them when they come under stain. Such bonded or sintered carbides are expensive so to save expenses they are usually inserted into larger iron alloy (steel) fixtures or bits. In mining carbide inserts let drills cut deeper holes at higher speeds. When the carbide finally wears out after repeated sharpening the inserts are debrazed and the insers and drill steels recycled separately. In icebike tires the bits may be too small to be worth troubling with. I would want to know will the studs/bits wear out about as fast as the rest of the tire? If the studs last a lot longer than the tire I would want cheaper studs or a better tire.

I have two seasons on a pair of the Nashbar/Kenda tires, they are great for snow under 2", road slush and ice. The Nokians I have are better on frozen rutted trails and in deeper snow.

The tungsten carbide inserts that look soldered into aluminum holders in the Nokian tires, do not get any shorter. What happens is the tire casing behind the stud weakens and the studs go too far into the tire. Then they do not grab well.
I already posted this and photos of the studs in another thread running now about Nashbar tires being carbide or not.

I recently ordered 2 of these Nashbar studded tires for the price of 1. They sent me Innovas! The Nashbar studs aren't currently available. They wouldn't do that on purpose would they?:(

These are the 700c x 35 cyclocross Nasbar sold for $15 that I bought. I had to get a 700 wheelset for my Raleigh because they did not fit the modern bike. Don't know if they are Kenda.

But all studded tires are not the same. That may not matter to you, but it does to some. I'm of course not sure what your wife ordered compared to what you received but in my case, it was two completely different things. I ordered the exact tires this thread is about but didn't get them.

Wow, you are really getting out of hand with this.
When you ordered from Nashbar, did the page say any of the following things:
These tires are made specifically by Kenda?
These tires specifically have carbide tips?
My wife did not see either of those when she ordered the tires.

And your addition to this topic is? The foo forum is the place for your worthless drivel.
Nashbar sold this tire out quickly because it was such a good buy before Christmas and as I speculated, their inventory and web site do not update concurrently. Whereas their policy is to notify the customer when the stock is depleted, in my case somebody tried to slip a lesser product by me.
The item that they ran out of was, by the way, a Nashbar branded Kenda carbide tipped studded tire.
