BMX - how many custom bikes

hey guys, how many of you ride a custom bike that you have built from either a stock complete or a frame.
Im just wonderin.

i started with a Haro Backtrail 01, then got a Backtrail 03 now the only thing i have stock is the frame...everything else has been replaced because i broke the old parts....


im getting a new frame soon too...

My MTBs are all custom. But give me some time, and an opportunity to ride my BMX bikes, and they'll be custom too. As soon as I figure out what they need done. The Backtrail X3 seemed pretty good as a complete, with the exception of the brake.

yeah...my X3 came...fully loaded...with the exception of a cassette hub, good brakes, and those nyquist 4pc bars(which i didnt want)

Did you ever get the evolvers?

My X3 came with a cassette hub. I'll probably pick up the Evolvers this weekend, I've just been slack. AU$45 for the brake and a Primo lever, both new.

AU45 what is that US I have no idea, but I have evolvers and there are really good you get a nice firm stop outta them. I run dual cable outta the gyro to them. How where you gunna run them?

AU$45 is a little over an hour of work. I'll leave the gyro on there for now.

Is the J-lever like a trigger lever, my shop sucks and only have regular old shimano and some ody. stuff.

NO the J-lever is not a trigger...but Odyssey does make a Trigger under the Mono-lever series...(its called the Mono lever trigger...)
and as for the J-Lever...its just a regualar lever with no exposed bolts to cut fingers on and super smooth looking and slightly bent...so you dont have to...

i do. I started with a free agent maverick but broke almost everything accept the fork, stem, and bars so i now have a fit pro frame, hula hoop rear wheel, and my free agent race fork, stem, and bars. its pretty nice but a little heavy... i think the frame is the thing thats the most overweight...

I've thought about building a bike, for about 10 secs. I just don't need the aggrivaiton. It's alot easier to just write a check for a bike that's good enough. If I were wildly competitive, and the bike made the difference in winning and losing. I might build a better bike. Until then, mine is just fine. Even at 210 lbs, Nothings broken after 2 years. I used to go through cranks, spindles and pedels as a teen. But I guess they make them better now.

I guess mine is 'custom'.

Its one of the first few proto macneil 22" frames, so it has no serial number.
The frame has been sandblasted and powdercoated recycling box blue.
I built it up myself with components I picked based on my riding style
(LHD cassette etc).
My stem has been milled/tapped to accept larger bolts for more bar clamping force.
My Bars are chopped to 23"
Seatpost cut.
Custom spoke/plate brake straddle cable to increase leverage.
Custom Delrin Grind plate on one pedal.

That's US$33, if you convert it, but things aren't that simple. The retail price in Australia for the lever is $60, for the brake, $80. Yes, it's a smokin' deal.

are either of these hard to set up/work very well?

what kind of modification do you have to do for the spoke straddle cable?

and do the pedal grind plates ever flip upside down on tricks like no footers and can-cans so that you land on the gaurd and slip?

or are they balanced?

The straddle set up was a bit of a ***** to get setup.
Basically I just wanted to get around the seat tube and have a short straddle.
It took a bit of fiddling, but turned out pretty well. It offers as much of a mechanical advantage as drilling through the seat tube, only looking more industrial.
I made the 2 triangle plates, and used 6 pinchbolts (with nyloc nuts), and one straddle cable hanger, and 2 spokes.

It has flipped over on me, at the worst possible time.
I lost my footing on a rollout, and dragged the foot, and when I climbed back onto the pedal it was already the right way around.
Basically its weighted to always face down, but that doesn't apply when the bike is weightless.

so would you recommend the pedal plate thing..?

and do you think that i would destroy my aluminium Primo hollowbites riding street...or should i just use the pedal gaurd for park..since i have aluminium cranks..?

Hey, that's a pretty tight brake set up. Does having a short straddle increase the braking power by much?

I wouldn't. I ran one of those for a while, and it really doesn't help very much. You grind slower, all the hits to your pedal still kill the bearings, and it's more slick if your foot lands on the wrong side of the pedal.
