I am in the planning stages for a trip from DC to Pittsburgh next spring. Has anybody ridded the unfinished section from Cumberland to Meyersdale? Is it passable at all or should I plan on a road detour? How about the northern extension from McKeesport to the Airport? There are several unfinished sections in that stretch too. Thanks for your help!

Hey thanks for responding I had about given up. I have already checked out the ATA site and it really didn't tell me what I need. The best plan I think is a recon trip this winter. I have ridden sections of the C&O and the Great Passage but those two problem areas north of Cumberland and around Pittsburgh are my big questions as I have not seen them. I think I am going to head to Cumberland one weekend and check out that stretch then recon the Pittsburgh part on the way home. I live in NE Ohio.
I'll let you know what I find. (Hope they get the sniper by then!)

Hi,

I cycled from D.C. to Pittsburgh, PA, and back in June 2002. Here is the report with photos. (http://enetplanet.com/cycling/usa/)

The section from Cumberland to Meyersdale is not finished. You will have to cycle on the road this section.

Make sure that you cycle via mountain Big Savage. If you make the wrong turn you will get on a road, which has so many uphills that one may get trashed. This is what nearly happened to us, but we were in good shape and finally overcame those mountains.

Unfortunately, the guy in the trail office in Cumberland never cycled this section and could not give us an advice.

On the way back we cycled correctly. It is not a big deal then.

From McKees Port till Pittsburgh, PA, the trail is not finished. We had to cycle on the road 834 (if my memory does not fail me). It has a lot of traffic. I mean a lot.

All the rest is finished.

Take with you mosquito lotion. Do not plan to camp close to D.C. Try to get some distance from D.C. until you camp. Ride on a bike with wide tires and fenders.
