Simple Green. A gallon cost about $8. Use it a chain cleaning device, or if you have the chain off of the bike, fill an old water bottle with a couple of inches of Simple green and shake. Repeat the shaking process a couple of time rinse w/ water, dry and relube.

Yeah I agree with X you can also use Citrus Degreaser and an old toothbrush if it is really gunked up, and you need to scrub some of it out.

I used to use the Pedro's citrus until I discovered Simple Green. Both work the same for me and are environmentally safe. Pedro's however is about $6 for 16oz. so I switched to the Simple Green. You can get generic citrus cleaner from Home Depot for about the same price as Simple Green.

Seems if something is marketed for bikes, the price goes up. Look at bike shock oil vs. motorcycle shock oil (which you can use in your fork).

I was totally sold on citrus degreasers until I was working with a small cut on my thumb. I can report an uncomfortable burning sensation each time the thumb got in the way.
