Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - pool: which pedal Crank Bros Mallet or Time Atac Z?

Hi Everyone!
This will be my first clipless (now clips+sraps) i am debating between those two, as they have a patform which will allow to use other shoes so which pedal you reccomend:Crank Bros Mallet or Time Atac Z (control)?
please let me kow your experience whith these pedals, or suggest a better alternative.

nice pedals, but:
a bit pricey & no platform
also i am not sure they have a cleat for my mtb shimano shoes
are you actually using them? with what shoes?

if so, you might not want downhill pedals. They're super wide and are basically pedal strikes waiting to happen

I got some Mallets for my mtb, hoping to not have to switch pedals for city riding. I'd usually run cheapo bmx platforms and loved the wideness and traction pins. Thought the Mallets looked better than the shimano clipless / platform combo pedals, so I gave 'em a shot.

I tend to wear Chuck Taylors, Sambas or other soft shoes with thin soles. The Mallets SUCKED for riding in such footwear. The eggbeater spindle protrudes above the platform / cage, so that's what most of your foot makes contact with-- try riding a rigid bike around for awhile like that and it'll kill your feet. Not much better than riding around on plain bare eggbeaters.

To make things worse, the eggbeater spindles rotate freely, so any weight placed on 'em can easily slip off. I've had a few dicey moments wearing street shoes on Mallets, pedalling hard / fast, where my foot unexpectedly flies off and I nearly lose control.

They work fine for riding while clipped in, but I absolutely f'in hate 'em with casual street shoes. They might work better with a running or cross-trainer shoe where there's more padding on the sole.

are cleats of mallet & candie the same? (two pedals one pair of shoes)

about strike: i think the cage could be removed if it really bothers and become a regular eggbeater. am i wrong?

I don't think that'd work-- the axle is as long as the cage:

could you elaborate please?

I run Candy SL eggbeaters on my Steamroller. They work just fine, although I use a front brake instead of skidding all the time. When I have skidded, I haven't had any problems with popping out. The cleats are the same for all the eggbeaters with the possible exception of the "road" version. Don't get the Mallets though - I agree with the opinion that riding them in street shoes sucks. I highly recommend the Candy eggbeaters as road pedals, the extra support is good for those epic rides. On my mountain bike I prefer the standard eggbeaters for the extra mud clearing capability.

Yeah, I'd like to hear about this. I never tried them because 300g per pair tells me that a 230 pound rider, 25 pound bike and 25 pounds of clothing shoes and bag aren't what they're designed for, and I won't be convinced that they can hack it.

But they're steel mountain bike pedals. They can hack pedaling I'm sure.

ATACs I so love and will say so every pedal thread. Especially in combination with my new Exustar cheapo shoes, making riding with a foot unclipped a breeze due to the very squishy rubber plus stiffish sole, and the soles somehow having just the right place for me to rest on the clips without accidentally engaging the cleat or slipping off.

These ones I mean: very ugly (mmm, teal and burgundy plus gray fake suede and three velcro straps, they look like Sparx), and fit very large - I'm normally a 47 and I swim in these, but I've got plenty of room for winter socks and stuff. These plus ATACs plus me and my bike equals total love.

the mallets would be good if you were wearing shoes that had some arch to the soul, like jogging/hiking shoes, but chucks and vans will give you issues.

Times. I have the CB candies. They're alright but I have come out of them before by accident and they feel kinda mushy. When I wear these out I think I'm gonna switch.
