I was out walking during my lunch break today and saw a scary sight. Picture this:

A young woman driving a small car (Honda, Nissan, etc.) with her left hand holding a cell phone held up to her left ear.
Her right hand was holding a pen and she was writing on one of these dashbard/windshield mounted notepads.

Question: Who was driving the car?

I'm glad I was walking on the sidewalk and not riding in front of her on the road. :crash:

Yep! People reading, writing, talking on the phone, blasting the radio, putting on makeup, brushing their hair, scratching that itch, playing the accordion, knitting a sweater and scolding their kids but driving real fast because you know, daddy can't go anywhere else but at home and this time it's a real emergency. It makes me wish I could ride off-road sometimes.

That's a woman for you, if they took women off the streets for 24 hours, the accident rate would go way down.:)

I agree, but it would be less than 50% reduction.

Yesterday lunchtime, I get a big fright. I'm on the sidewalk and turn a corner. Some wanker, his wanker pal, and no-brainer passengers suddenly head towards me in an attempt to pass around a traffic queue. Excuse me, I thought to myself afterwards, what was I thinking of to consider walking on the sidewalk when a car was on it at the same time. The collective IQ of the car looked around 30, the driver probably accounted for 10 points. Wankers.

You forgot to add watching TV now since all of the minivans and many full size trucks include TVs as options now.

Just yesterday, I saw a guy reading the newspaper while driving. Had it folded out and you couldn't see his face. If I couldn't see him, what could HE see?

I just put a bicycle-horn on my bike. It sounds almost as if a heavy truck gives a signal.

It is produced in Taiwan. I hope I will be able to send audio signals to such drivers from now on.

goodcatjack, NO I'm not drunk, but the way some women drive, I wonder if they are. :)

Today I saw a frightening thing. We were on a ride, and passing through an area where we usually slow down because there is a lot of pedestrian traffic, kids, etc. As we were cruising through, I saw this incredibly ancient old lady, at least in her 80s or maybe even older, unlocking the door to her car ( very nice, rather new car). She looked really feeble and frail and It hought, ye gods- she's going to drive a car! Sometimes these ancient drivers really worry me. A few weeks ago a man in his 80s caused a terrible accident when he drove up on a sidewalk and killed someone and injured several people. They showed him on tv and he looked totally out of it- apparently he was really senile, according to the witnesses. There are a lot of elderly people around here and in that part of town as well. They scare the s*** out of me! For all I know this lady could have been a really great driver, but I doubt it. However, in that part of the island, there isn't much in the way of public transit and it's probably hard for people to get around without cars. It's really suburban and there isn't much you can get to by walking. Incidentally, there are tons of cyclists out there.

I would not mind taking some drivers off the streets to reduce traffic and smog.

But singling out women is unfair and gross. It is also unfair to single out elderly people.

The society is laced with the prejudices in many ways. Sooner or later anyone can be discriminated for one "reason" or another. Just wait, if it did not happen to you yet.

We should be aware of bad drivers, not of female or elderly drivers.

Alexey, you are right that we should not discriminate.

We should just take all the drivers off the road for 24 hours:p

Guys, I should have said If they took the bad women driver s off the street it would reduce the accident rate, I say this because before I posted it, I was out riding, and a woman went right thru a stop sign ,and came within 1 inch of killing me, so I told her that she should be off the road, and it's not the first time that this has happened either.

Men are capable of colliding aircraft with skyscrapers. Would a woman do this?

Crazy Cyclist

men are more than capable of doing this, im sure that they have, but every time I have come close to being in an accident, a woman has been behind the wheel, c'mon men it's your turn. J/k I don't mean to single out women drivers, there are bad drivers in every group, whether it is male, female, seniors ,or young people. I just feel that there should be mandatory retesting for drivers every 4 years or so.

Your pattern of 4 near-misses with gals isn't really a very good sample -- maybe it's not them, it's you. I mean, you were involved in every one of these incidents. :D

NC, i never said that I have been in 4 near misses with women it has only been about twice, and I think I may have been distracted by their good looks, and wasn't paying attention to my cycling. :) So if I have offended anyone, than I apologize, it was not my intention.

Of course, you have not offended anyone.

It could have been just unpleasant for a woman, who is a superb and careful driver to read that she is bundled.

But since you even apologized, there is no problem whatsoever.

I do not know if there was a statistical research, regarding who causes more accidents.

I have more bad experience with impatient male drivers on expensive models. It seems they try to justify that big money spent on the car by trying to find an advantage, which it has uber other vehicles.

Crazy Cyclist

Alexi, thanks for your understanding, I agree with you about impatient drivers, they spend a lot of money on their rides, and for some reason, they think they have to justify their spending by driving like a idiot.

CrazyCyclist,
Sorry if I read your post too fast and then responded -- that's what happens when I am trying to do too many things during my lunchhour.

No, no one is offended. Happy trails.

NC, no need to apologize, I hope you got to eat. I just want to say all the best with your riding.

I nearly got creamed by some stupid guy the other day. Then I saw a stupid woman barrel right through a stop sign without even looking at it. Moron drivers come in all stripes.

However, I think IMPAIRED drivers are something else. Old people driving, that's fine, but if they are really impaired, no. I read about a recent accident where an elderly woman killed a kid by backing over her. She was apparently deaf and didn't hear people screaming at her. Sorry, but someone who can barely see or hear should not be driving. It would be like me driving (or cycling) without my glasses! I'd be blind!

crazy cyclist ... it was a hell of a comment to make under the pretext of not wanting to offend anyone. good thing you apologized.

what is the official definition of a "wanker?"
