Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - what about the tube?

okay, so I know my shiny new headset will fit my old fork and all that, but how do I know if it'll all fit in the head tube of the frame I'm using? I've read over sheldon's site and it's just not clicking in my head.

Also, I couldn't find info on bottom bracket/crank set compatibility/measuring so I have no idea what kind/size cranks/bb's I need. Thanks!

well ...what size is your headtube?

This is a threaded headset? Take the length of the steer tube, and subtract the stack height of the headset and the length of the headtube. For it to fit, the result should be zero, or a few mm above zero.

For chainline/crank/bb compatibility, you need to know what kind of crank you are using. Each crank has a specific bb for a given chainline. Track chainline is usually 42mm (if i remember correctly). Once you get the crank, figure out what length BB spindle will give you this.

For the BB, measure the shell. If 70mm, get ital BB. If 68, get ISO.

for the most part. the headset I just removed from the frame was threaded and all my other bikes are threadless. And from looking at the diagram of my new headset for the other, free wheeling bike i'm building, there's a lot more hardware than what I just took off this old depot. bike.

As for anything beyone that, no, I'm as ignorant as a potato.

It's a threadless cane creek s-3 that did come with a small allen bolt I originally bought for my other bike but, if it'll fit this other, I'll use it and by a better one for the other bike.

And just to make sure I'm understanding correctly about the bb: I just measure the width of the shell (on the frame) and the rest is decided by spindle lenght?
