I'm planning to replace a 1 1/8" threadless fork on a friends MTB. The thing I'm wondering is will I be able to re-use the headset crown race if I remove it w/ a crown race remover (as opposed to driving it off w/ a punch or some other violent means). Or do I need to go ahead and buy a new headset before I get started (or maybe just a new crown race, if that's possible)?

I tried searching the forums, but couldn't find much. And Park's website tells yopu how to get a race off, but I didn't see anything about being able to reuse it.

Thanks

-Will

I'd go ahead and reuse. Only thing you stand to lose is time if it doesn't work out.

Depends on the race and if you can remove it without damage. Some are nearly indestructible, others are fragile.

I've been able to transfer crown races to new forks but Sidney is correct. Some are brittle so you want to use care removing them. The easiest to work with are the "split" races. These come off and go on with finger pressure. FSA uses them on some of their cartridge bearing heasdets and there may be others.
