Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Austin, TX: I will be in you.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Is Austin CM worth shipping my bike for?
Don't ship it, use my Freight Baggage carrier and bring it on the plane with you, no charge. It's not considered oversized, so you don't have to pay the fee.

What is this carrier of which you speak? I'm traveling fairly frequently this year (including a trip to Austin in March) and want to take my bike as many places as possible. For Chicago, I completely broke down my bike into two boxes that were under the size limits, but I had to construct one that fits my frame exactly (think parallelogram) to do so.

just be careful with locking it up. I believe austin is number 1 in the country now for bike thefts
Critical Mass. How far away are you Don?
Ill be outside Austin (on lake travis) for Thanksgiving, then to Houston for the weekend. Im not sure I'll actually be in Austin Friday night, so Im just speculating here.

There's a guy in SF who makes messenger bags under the name "Freight Baggage". He now makes flight cases as well. It's basically a cordura box, with hard plastic sides that is designed to fit your bike (taken apart) in with regular checked luggage. It works really well, but you have to take everything but the BB off.
are you going for SXSW?
SXSW is in March, isnt it?

I'm not going to SXSW, unfortunately. It's a work conference (albeit with lots of booze).
Judah, does "Freight Baggage" have a website? It's really hard to google such a common phrase. That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for!

NO. Austin CM rotates around UT's enrollment.
Summertime - ~5ppl
Fall - ~15ppl (maybe) ~2 if it's cold.
Spring - ~20ppl (maybe)
I've been 1 of 3 ppl doing CM at a time. It just doesn't work here after they had some big fist fight with a driver. The most recent one (Halloween) was around 25ppl. In my opinion, that's pretty lame.
Day after Thanksgiving, there will be next to NOONE there. However, the roads will also be vacant making for good riding.
Rides you shouldn't miss in Austin: Jingle Bell ride (thousands of ppl - Dec 18th this year I believe) and the annual Moonlight cruise (~150). We throw an alleycat about every month or so. Good times usually.
Oh wait - speaking of alleycats.......
I just remembered that we're having another one for Thanksgiving - the annual Gobble Wobble. Probably about 10-15ppl. Perfect way to begin a Thanksgiving.....

... then to Houston for the weekend.
I'm sorry you have to spend a weekend here. Just in case you had planned to ride in Houston as well. It doesn't look like there are any Post-Turkey rides going on here. Well, I haven't found anything yet.
Thanks for the invitation Don! My family just set up out there so Ive got my own eating responsibilities =) I would love to see the shop someday, though I dont think it'll be this weekend.
That thanksgiving scramble sounds fun! I wonder if the family would notice me sneaking out. Its a shame about CM. Riding CM out here I get the same feeling sometimes, that many people go out for the wrong reasons, and those reasons often turn into regrettable behavior. I dont want to be an ***hole, anarchist, etc by association.
Im not going to have time to ride in Houston Im sure. I need to spend that time with my aging grandparents for sure.

I don't think he has a website, the best way to get one is to contact Travis at Freewheel Hayes in SF: 415-752-9195
I showed my case to a few people in Chicago, it's pretty nice, but will run you around $250 or so. You have to take your cranks off for it, but it's worth it to get around the $100 round-trip that airlines charge.

That's excellent. I agree with you - the crowds at CM vary greatly. Sometimes, there can be such a positive vibe that it's an amazing time. Others - I regret even riding with them.
So you're down for the Gobble Wobble?

I'll be out of town, otherwise i'd offer you my house. CM here sucks, and Bicycle Sport Shop races usually suck. BUT Austin is a great town to ride in, with lots of cool people to ride with. Bike polo on Wednesday night. PM me if you want some numbers to get in on that action. Definately bring your bike.

Forgot about that too. Maybe this time we'll get our mallets together eh?

When/where? Hopefully I get my conversion finished before too long.
I am out of the loop, cuz I literally live outside of the loop.

Let your Austin friends know in advance.
Josh (messenger Josh) handed out a bunch of flyers at the last race...so maybe lots of folks will be there. Transportation is a problem though.

Go Greyhound. You can be the first to put a hitch mounted bike rack on a greyhound.
