im having my colnago resprayed and i am wondering how tricky are they to strip down. im a toolmaker by trade so have mechanical knowledge but none on road bikes and im abit concerned about removing the sti levers and shifter the group set is a chorus any advice much appreciated

In the end, the parts that are most likely to cause you trouble are the headset cups that the fork bearings run in, and the bottom bracket. The rest of it can be unbolted, and when the time comes to hook up the shifters again, you can refer to guides on Park Tool's site and Sheldon Brown's site for guidance.
There is a special tool for removing headset cups, another for reinstalling them. Depending on the model of Chorus bottom bracket your bike uses, you might need the tool pictured below, or you might need a set of traditional-style tools. These two tasks (headset and bottom bracket removal/installation) could be left to a local bike shop with the specialty tools needed, if you don't want to buy the tools or improvise them.

The stem, bars and brake/gear levers can be removed as a unit. There is no need to dissasemble them further.
