View Full Version : Tips on starting a cycling club?
Hi guys and gals, my name is Ryan and I am a college student in South Jersey. I go to a lame college called The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Just kidding, it's not all that bad, but seriously, it's pretty lame (doesn't even have a football team, the masculine sport on campus is soccer). Anyway, just wanted to know if there is anyone out there who has any knowledge of the best way to get non-cyclists interested in the sport. I had a few ideas like putting together a fleet of rigid singlespeeds for people to sign out until they realize they need to purchase a bike of their own. Anything would be appreciated!
thanks, ryan
Here's what I do with the Scouts in my troop:
1. Plan a ride.
2. Let everyone know where and when it is.
Not too tough. Of course with the Scouts, they have to bring in their bike for a safety inspection first.
First, you need some interested potential members. Since they are not experienced cyclists (yet), plan a short, fun ride. Is there a fun destination, or can you end the ride with a barbeque or something? Be sure everyone has maps, be sure the route is carefully marked, or be sure it is stupid simple. You don't want to lose members right off the bat!
Does the college have a LBS? Will they let you post a flyer?
Getting a fleet of fixies to borrow sounds pretty ambitious to me. I'd stick with building up a core group of riders first. Some of them may have an extra bike to loan, then you can get a few non-bike-owners riding too.
Good luck.
By the way, I spent most of my athletic experience on the soccer pitch, but I know what you mean...
