I saw this bike, and several like it, on the streets and in the countryside around Goma, DR Congo. No brakes, no chain, (no metal at all), loaded with 500lbs of bananas, zipping down the mountainside into town. I'm still not quite sure how they stop.

what's that thing on the back wheel?
...
no..
you wouldn't be able to get enough resistence to slow 500lbs
and speaking of which
where would you put the bananas?
on that front thingy?

Actually, now that I think about it, I seem to recall that that wooden beam visible in the backgroun is used for friction against the rear wheel somehow. The bananas (or water tanks, or tied-up goats) are strapped to the crossbar, and people ride standing up toward the back, kind of draped over the goods.

That's tight. I would totally have a crazy pet, like an African Mandrill. Teach him to ride a fixie.

because I was at the bottom of the hill (volcano, really), and when I went towards the top, the people weren't stopping :D
