Who is your favourite TV character of all time, and why?
I have a couple.
Schultz - 'Hogans Heroes'. Fat buffoons are funny.
JJ - 'Good Times'. What a clown.
Fletch - 'Porridge'. Funny and clever.
Jim Rockford - 'The Rockford Files'. Great show, great character. Could not imagine anyone but James Garner in the role.

Some runner ups:
JJ Walker from Goodtimes is a good choice. Just wacky funny.
Rerun from What's happening was funny. Kudos for a fat guy to be cool.
Det. Stan Wojciehowicz from Barney Miller was cool and funny both.
Father from Family Ties as wise and level headed....always wanted to trust his judgement.
Princess Ardala from Buck Rogers in the 25th century. Really beautiful and had the evil "in charge" thing going on. ;)
Samantha from Bewitched. Intelligent, funny and a little goofy....not the most beautiful women, but something irresitably sexy about her.
Final vote - three way tie. All Cool.
John Randal (Steve McQueen) from Wanted: Dead or Alive
Dave Madison (Bruce Willis) from Moonlighting
Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) from Remington Steele
Tough call between those three. Dave Madison was really cool and super funny. Remington Steele wasn't quite as funny (a little funny), but was a bit more on the cool side. John Randall wasn't really funny at all, but was probably the best "strong and silent" character ever put to the tv/movie screen.

Face from the A-Team because he was cute and such a smooth talker
Olivia from Law & Order:Special Victims Unit because she is always fighting for the victims no matter what
Detective Andy Sipowicz from NYPD Blue. Strong, tough facade Overcame his addiction. Originally homophobic, but developed an understanding and sensitivity. Caring father.
Abby on NCIS, One confident gal, smart and individual too. Just cool.

Tony Soprano and Christopher Moltisanti from The Sopranos because the two make me wish there was a mafia - haha.
Lenny Brisco from Law and Order because of his one-liners about a case/suspect/whatever.
Toby Ziegler from The West Wing because of his pompous attitude.

Did you ever see 'Til Death Do Us Part' with Warren Mitchell playing Alf Garnett? It probably didn't play in the States. Most unlovable TV character ever, but also one of the funniest.
Another favourite of mine from British TV is Sir Humphrey out of 'Yes, Minister' and 'Yes, Prime Minister'.

I can't believe I forgot my FAVORITE character!!!
I have to change my mind and say all I posted above as tying for first actually tie for second. There is a clear winner for my FAVORITE TV character of all-time!!! I even make reference to him in my user-text.
Dr. Who is the BEST TV character of all-time!

But which Dr.?
My favorite would be Sylvester McCoy (last one before it was cancelled in early 90s).
http://www.vortigernstudies.org.uk/drwho1.jpg
Followed next by the latest Dr. Who (when it was brought back this year), Christopher Eccelston.
http://www.earth-2.net/images/features/dr_who/dr_09.jpg
I only pictured Tom Baker above because he's, by far, the most famous and the one that *most* people would recognize if any of the Doctors.
People come on...Cordell Walker in "walker texas ranger"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
