Winter Cycling - A winter equation: bigger shoes + thicker socks = problems unclipping

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

okay, fighting cold feet here. I just got the new, bigger sized shoes to accommodate the new, thicker, fancy-schmancy socks and create some wiggle-room. I just fitted the new SPD cleats, got them in nice and tight, and while everything shoe-wise fits nicely and is quite cushy, I immediately noticed it is *much* harder to unclip.

I think that much of the torque is absorbed by all the cushion.

Suggestions? Tighten up the shoe straps much tighter to compensate? I don't want to cut off the circulation and/or defeat the purpose of the bigger shoes and the (proposed) increased air circulation, toe wiggling, blood-flow-inducing benefits.

Try decreasing the pedal tension.

When the adjustment bolt is turned clockwise, the spring tension
increases, and when it is turned counterclockwise, the spring tension
decreases.

Update:

I decreased the tension on the pedal and it is much improved. Thanks for the suggestion. New pedals purchased (I decided on the 540s) and ready to go on. . . I tried to get the old ones off but no can do.

I am sure one of my friends has a pedal wrench, however. :)
