Yeh I need a 'chain stay' protecter on my bike, its not so much the chipping of the paint its the annoying noise 'clink, clink' every time I go over a bump/jump! Will look into one...

No need for a pic. Visualize electrical tape, and you've got it.
Homemade are the way to go IMO. Wasting your money if you buy one from the lbs.
i got a black lizard skins on there. been working great, no plans of getting rid of it.

The best thing ever designed was the old Shimano Shark Fin. 14+ years ago we had it figured out that the only way to keep them on the chainstay was to melt a small hole through the fin for a zip tie. With two zip ties on it nothing could touch it. Shimano eventually started packaing it with a hole and zip ties after the guys at MBA shared how to keep them on. Still have one on my GT Xizang to this day. I don't think they are still made but they do show up on ebay once in a while for ~$10.00. The lizard skin work ok but they can get pretty nasty looking if you ride in a lot of muddy conditions.

Spotted lizard skin. No more clinks, just little "eeeppps!" when I go over bumps..... Wait.....lizard SKIN???? Heck, I've been using the whole dang lizard!!!! No wonder I had problems with those zip ties.......

well this Downhill bikes Do crash a lot and more than a lot they crash Really, ReaLLY hard, so a nice strong protector is a good thing to have, also the chain is prone to hit the "seat stay" so i made a double guard,,,,,
can you say totally quiet
http://patineto.smugmug.com/photos/18731444-M.jpg
I love my Ritchey WCS tyre and I was really sad to see her go,,,,, but as a chainstay frame protector is pretty cool
http://patineto.smugmug.com/photos/18731445-L-1.jpg
I don't know if you can see but the guard is "Shoe lace" to the frame ussing nylon cord like on a shoe or even better a fancy corset

MY Nicolai M-Pire the lower chain stay guard is made of "seft vulcanazing" tape that you can find a fancy boat shops,,,
Amazing stuff super strong and very rubber like,, in fact becomes a whole unit after a few hours after the you rap it
http://patineto.smugmug.com/photos/25958869-L-3.jpg
actually take a look at the "Seat stay" guards, the nicolai's are super wide at the rear dropouts, with a 165MM hub and rectuangular chain stays you heals end up hitting on the seat stay all the time so I made this thermoplastic carbon guards by hand to protect the finish and the longetivy of the frame

same Vulcanize tape on my Azonic saber.

if you need something narrow, durable and self adhesive this is the best

old tube :D
That used to be my old one. It worked fine until i found something better :D
A used tennis grip. Leaves gooey stuff on the frame though.

I once took a piece on 20mm PVC electrical conduit and cut a section of it out and then just clipped it onto the chainstay, that stayed on my bike until it retired. I have not tried this on any of me other bikes(been to lazy) but have got a lizard skin for my latest bike now. MMMM think I must try this again. Much easier to maintain than lizard skins.

Thats something that i'd use if i had a DH bike. It is an old tire right?
I use an old tube then wrapped that in electrical tape.

I had a piece of clear plastic tubing zip tied on for awhile. It was moving around more than I liked. So, I replaced it with two "TK Burgers" stickers for the time being.

The cheapest way is using a tube that has been resealed 3 times and wrapping it around the chainstay then using 3 zipties to secure it.
Doesn't get any cheaper then that.

Who needs a chainstay guard :D :D :D
Sorry, no picts, but my two favorites are: old Schwinn 10-speed handlebar tape (many retro-cool colors) and gaffer's tape (black, kinda like hockey stick tape or duct tape - very tough). Anything homemade and innovative is cool. Boughten chainstay guards are one of those insidious things that the bicycle chachka-makers foist off on the unsuspecting "gotta look propper" crowd to get them used to parting with money for things easily made themselves.

that's an insidious opinion, that the "experts" foist off on to unsuspecting newbs.
Yah wanna know what any chain stay protector has in common, whether it be homemade or bought. It protects your chainstay.
SO what if costs money, some people don't care if it's homemade or not.
What's next; PVC pipe forks.
i happen to like my Lizard Skin alot more than the used tube i had, thank you very much. It was a blown tube wrapped in electrical tape with two zip ties on the ends and it worked great. but, i happen to like my lizard skin 10 times better. For one i like it more (preference), two it's a million times easier to remove (snip the zip ties, and unvelcro).
Heres mine. It's working good so far...

Section of clear water supply hose slit down one side and secured with zip ties. Used on my trail bike. Cost ~ $1.50 for the hose. I reused some zip ties that had been used by the manufacturer to pack new bikes that I had assembled at the shop.

Section of used Specialized Armadillo Road tire with beads removed and attached with zip ties. Used on my commuter bike. Cost $0. Zip ties were obtained in same manner as above.

I happen to prefer having the $8 in my wallet. Mine are even faster to remove than yours and protect a whole lot better

Yep :) I saw the water supply hose at my local warehouse. I think it was $2 a metre.

Actually this are my Favorite chainstay guards, I use the material from the "Mister Tuffy" whatever useless tyre strips, but they make for the best Chain guard material since the are flexible strechable (some of them,,, the ones I like at least) and super dupper resistent to cuts and abrations...
plus you get sufficient material for two bikes for every tyre strip..
