he doesn't speak for me.

but i suck at bball. i noticed, though, that the muscles i use for soccer and those i use for riding my bike seem different. i was really sore the day after game a few months ago, but when i jumped on my bike it's like the pain was gone!

agreed that basketball is wank... and velodrome racing is as much about cleverness and skill as it is about raw power. i miss it a lot already.

I'm sorry, climbing hills on a fix won't help anyone jump higher. Hillclimbing uses slow-twitch muscle fibers and build up endurance, while jumps are about max power. Possibly short sprints would help.

Yeah, riding fixed isn't really going to do much for your hops. Unless you're mixing it with barley and making beer. Then....well it's still not going to do very much.

I thought this post was going to be about the fixed-gear baseball league that I proposed a few months ago whereby the length of a skid determines the bases you get for your "hit". Failing to start the skid before the skid-start line would be a "strike". Skids that failed to meet a certain distance would be considered outs. I was disappointed that only jhnmrk like the idea then, and this post is irrelevant to it.

Won't anyone play this game with me?

Why so much hate fellas? I play ball also, and years of riding have done
nothing for my non-existent hops. I think the two are totally different animals.

Good for you at the very least it should help your endurance.

are you basing this on your biology class knowledge?

No...riding fixed will not teach you how to jump (nor teach you how to play ball)...you have to learn how to jump and jump to get used to that by actual experience and repetition...
but if you know how to jump, most activities that strengthen your legs WILL increase your hops (generated by leg strength)

TRUST ME....riding my bike PERIOD (even before I got fixed) helps my hops and other activities ( I run track).... I know through experience

You should post your theories in the training and nutrition forum.

Or maybe you're imagining it? It's what you want to happen right? Maybe its just wishful thinking.

There is no such thing as "strengthening your legs". There are two kinds of muscle fibers for two kinds of jobs. Some say that developing the one (endurance) reduces the other (explosive).
Having better endurance sure does help when you're playing your 5th match, though:D

I won't even respond to those two statements.
...and regardless, if Fixed gear riding doesn't involve both endurance and explosiveness, then you ride very differently than me

are you telling me that jumping rope (endurance) doesn't increase my hops?... and are you telling ME that ME riding MY bicycle doesn't strengthen MY legs and increase my hops?

if you are, then...you're wrong

Dude. I am so down with that. Anything invoking the national past-time is fine in my book. I admit, I'm a total dork like that though.

But FG Baseball? I like it.

What about FG Polo?

sorry if this is too on-topic, but I usually play a lot of bball over the summer. a few years back when I started riding fixed, my gear was too high for me (46x16) and one time after a day of ball I went to the movies... cold AC plus tweaked knees equals bad pain.

but yeah I have not found much crossover between riding fixed and bball, in terms of one specifically helping with the other. general fitness of course carries over. just be sure to stretch knees hips & ankles.
