Landlord took my bike for the season!

Apparently he didnt want bikes out on the bike racks during the cold season, so he made everyone take them off. Since bikes arent allowed in the buildings, we could either store them for the season for the cost of $15, or we could put them somewhere else, so long as they weren't on his racks. I went ahead and let him store it.

The problem here is that I wanted to ride my bike this winter. I was planning a ride on thanksgiving day to work to see how long it would take me and how cold it would be, hopefully so I could stop asking coworkers for rides to work, but I can't do it because my bike is now inaccessible. Itll probably be like, march or april before i can ride again. =(

Well that was pretty poor planning to let the guy take your bike away from you! JEEZ, what were you thinking? Lock the damn thing up in the hallway. Just use the bike rack, what kind of totalitarian compound do you live in anyway? Exercise your rights up to the limitations in your lease. Find a compromise. And somehow you're operatin under the mistaken belief he has the right to hold your property until April even if you ask for it back? SOME SPINE, MAN, SOME SPINE!

If your bike is stored on site, I'd ask the super to come unlock my bike, NOW.

Perhaps he thinks it's best for everyone. I would definatly say that you have to deal with the man. Tell him you need your bike in the winter, and ask him what you can do.

Don't just let him do this thing and keep it shut.

Last July I was offered a trailer load of about 50 bikes that were left behind on the racks of a local college. Apparently, each summer they remove the abandoned bikes when school ends. Obviously the owners didn't place a whole lot of value on these rigs.

Actually, I'm in Dekalb, Illinois now. It gets cold here. Colder than Chicago. Lots.

Get a folding bike then. After you fold it, place it in a duffle-like bag and carry it in.

+1 To the folder, to see why i think it can be just as good (and in many ways superior to a) a regular bike check my page in my sig.

Bikes are to be ridden, if circumstances prohibit this it is often sensible to look at a bike that will work with those circumstances and allow you to keep riding.

How can he legally do that? How come there are bike racks used year round in places like Minneapolis where I live? I know it doesn't get cold there like it does here.

Tell him that if he's going to take away bike transportation for the winter, he should do the same with all the cars that park there. If parking is offered for cars as part of the rental agreement, then it should stand to reason that bikes are allowed, too.

And how's he going to know it's inside, anyways? I keep all of mine inside, no one's ever said anything. I just put a blanket down during the winter to catch the melting snow...

Also, folder++. I was able to ride to work every day to a Madison Ave office building thanks to the purchase of my folding bike.
