Commuting - Close escape yesterday (or one of the commuting dangers I hadnt anticipated)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It happened when I was returning home yesterday through the forest on my MTB. I had my spike tyres and wide rims. I was feeling generally pleased with the overall set up and how it was easily handling the snow and ice on the trail when I noticed a big tractor thing in the middle of some trees up ahead.

Ok no problem it wasn't moving much so I carried on along the path. Then to my horror I noticed that one of the huge trees next to the tractor thing started to topple in what looked to be my direction  . It was hard to tell in the dark but the shadow of the falling tree loomed over me on the bike trail  . Needless to say I floored it (as much as possible in the snow) and got out of there as fast as I could. I could almost feel the tree crashing through my body though and was wondering what it would be like to be dead  .

Luckily (or obviously I wouldn't be writing this) the tree did not seem to fall into my part of the trail and I escaped without any terminal injuries. But for a few moments there I really though that was it.

So for those of you cycling through the forest watch out for falling trees.

Yikes, that was pretty lucky.

Aren't they supposed to put up signs and yell "timber" when one is coming down. London is refered to as an urban jungle but that is at least one hazard I will never have to avoid.

Maybe it was in the "Black Forest" where Gummy Bears are made?

Hmmm....

Deep thoughts by Jack "Cyclist" Handy

Glad your not hurt. I was riding a few weeks ago and the wind was really blowing. I saw a limb come down in front of a house. Another reason helmets come in handy! Glad I saw it and it didn't fall in my path or on me!

Keep Cycling,
