Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's hard to believe that this thing started out as a frameset heaped on a pile in the backyard of a cycle customizer's backyard. After hanging up in my shed for roughly three quarters of a year, It's back on the road as a very nice road touring machine built from whatever I could get my hands on. It was only today that I finally test rode it.

Specs:

25" (63.5 cm) seattube
59 cm toptube (head to seattube)

Weight: 21 lbs.

Nishiki Tange 2 frame & fork,
Ukai 27X1-1/8" aluminum rims
Shimano 105 crankset, 42/52, standard 42, Shimano Biopace 52
Suntour Cyclone rear derailer
Suntour 6 cog rear road cluster
Suntour XC8000 front derailer (which works, but not to my satisfaction)
Sedis chain
Suntour Cyclone shifter levers
Dia-Compe brake calipers, "G" rear, 400 series front
Lee-Chi Aero brake levers (a brand known for cheap stuff, but these levers are an exception - they work very nicely)
Hsinlung handlebar w/aero cable routing, Sakae stem
Bontarager bar tape
Shimano Dura-Ace cables throughout
Avocet Touring saddle
Cateye Velo 2 cyclecomputer
Specialized Turbo-series 27X1 tyres, front is a Turbo LS, rear is a Turbo/S w/kevlar bead.

Enjoy the pics.

Take care,

-Kurt

Nice Nishiki you have there Kurt. Build group is a little bit of everything but it came out looking quite nice.

Thanks!

"A little bit of everything" sums it up quite well at that. As I intend to use it as a part-time rental through my Bike Doc Cycles buisness, I figured it would be best to just use a mishmash of parts.

The NOS Dia-Compe Gran-Compe brake/lever set at one of the LBS will just have to wait...hehehe. Pity is, it's tough enough to find a lightweight-tubing frame to start with around here, let alone one in spectacular shape.

Ditto here man. Friend of mine caught a killer deal a while back on a Centurion Dave Scott IronMan with Tange #1, but only because the frame needed some serious rehab before going back on the road.

I've been looking at the Gran-Compe stuff when it shows up on ebay. Stuff is getting a serious price these days when its in good condition.

Nice, in my size too!! Any idea what year it is? I have an older Nishiki comp II, but I don't know what kind of tubes it has, Tange something or other? anyone know? I'd say it it early to mid 80s model.

She's an '85 - dated her by the original Dia-Compe rear brake caliper.

Wouldn't know about the Comp. You might want to drop the fork out of the frame to see if it's stamped "Tange" on the steer tube, and hope that it also says which type tubing it is.

Check the Dia-Compe parts for build dates - that's your best way of IDing the rest.

Swap you that Comp II for an old, very tall (25" or 26") Raleigh Technium old-school MTB/hybrid frame I have here, very suitable for building up as a roadbike! ;)
