General Cycling Discussion - Bikes and bakeries

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It seems a lot of cyclists' ultimate goal in life is to find the perfect bakery that sells just the right cake or other savoury. And coffee. Usually a trendy Capacuino or Cafe Late thing (I know nothing about coffee, don't drink it usually). Is this normal? I find it strange as cycling is supposed to be about exercise, getting fit, and for a lot of people, losing weight.

My quest continues.
In the UK we have many excellent bakeries selling a wide variety of crumpets, rock cakes, angel cakes, coconut macaroons and other commestibles, but they serve lousy coffee.
The places which do good coffee sell plastic wrapped american style blueberry mock-muffins.
Cycling is nothing to do with getting fit or losing weight, it is the perfect way of travelling between meals.
In the UK, the Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) is known to racer types as Coffe, Tea and Cakes.
That's the funny thing...I'd much rather munch a tasty Pie or Pasty than a cake and coffee anyday...
Mmmm, Pie! :D

p.s. Peter's Pies are the best (well in the UK anyway)

my amigos south of the border, I know Crispy Cream or what ever is the name is making a very high name for itself, I hear my wife talking to one of her girlfriend that we have one in Richmond Hill, Ontario, and the line up wait to get the Donut of Crispy cream is like two and half Hours,, what is in this donut, I won't wait for two hours to get a donut, that's crazy...
but they serve lousy coffee.
True. The average restaurant/bakery is guilty of serving awful coffee. Costa, Starbucks and the other specialist coffee shops are guilty of serving awful food. Somewhere...

I like that. I went to the London cycle show last weekend. The CTC were laying in wait mantis-like ready to pounce on the unsuspecting public. I was attacked by the CTC and the join-up now chat-up line and the size of their waistlines, suggested too much coffee, tea, and cakes had been consumed. They boasted 58,000 members, and I have to wonder how many cakes the subscription fees can buy.:)

Well, for a population that thinks Tim Horton's makes good donuts, I wouldn't expect Canadians to understand.........
I was in Toronto 2 weeks ago, the first time I'd been to Canada in nearly 5 years. I'd forgotten just how bad the coffee and donuts were!

It's Krispy Kreme, and yes, they are ABSOLUTELY devine. Driving PAST a store when the sign is lit up is very difficult.

It is crazy, but they are delicious!!! We have many Krispy Kreme stores here in Missouri, which would explain the paunchy population. They are so popular that they now carry them in a certain local chain of grocery stores, making it even easier to obtain the tasty pastry puffs. I work in cubicle hell, with salespeople. We have reps come in and bring donuts and crap all day. They only ones that I can't resist are the Krispy Kremes. Here is my calculation.....
2 plain glazed Krispy Kremes = 2 extra miles on the bike:)
Here is the website........

Sorry, Redhed, but your calculations are way off.
According to the official Krispy Kreme website, each scrumptious
glazed ring packs a nutritious 200 calories, 100 of which are from
fat. :(
Revised calculations:
2 donuts x 200 cal = 400 cal
40 cal per mile on the bike
400 / 40 = 10 miles on the bike (at a good clip)

For the non-cognizenti, KKs have this automated donut making assembly line machine, and when the sign is lit, they are cranking out donuts, so you can go in and get 'em while they're hot.
The perfect prep for a century: 2 fresh glazed and a cup of 'jo. ;)
I do a 30 minute warm-up for my Saturday ride. I meet my riding buddy at a bagel shop about 3 miles from home for a V8 Juice and a multi-grain bagel. Then we take off for 20 miles or so. What could be wrong with that?
And, since starting my cycling last September, I have lost 60 pounds.

Methinks I might need to modify my Saturday rides such that I can hit a Noah's before I head out. I can probably even add an extra five miles that way...thanks!
I'm not the biggest donut eater but I have to try Krispy Kreme if they ever open one in my area (montreal). I rarely eat donugts any more because most of them are crap. I remember there were a couple of bakeries where you were able to get the most amazing, soft, delicious donuts. I hate Dunkin Donuts! But i will make an e exception to try a Krispy Kreme if I ever get the chance.

Try Sesame Donuts in Beaverton, OR, or Annie's on Sandy Blvd. in Portland. Both feature good, visible parking.

First thing, about Krispy Kreme, after seeing the sheet of glaze just ooooozing while the donuts shuffle past, that made me stop eating donuts.
I got a regular Starbucks I stop at. I don't go for the coffee, I go for the Iced Chai Tea Latte Venti. I skip the pastry thing though, I head next door to Popeye's Chicken for some Dirty Rice, or some may call it Cajun Rice. I just got told that Chai has more caffeine than coffee. Now I know why I bonk harder after a Starbucks stop, than if I don't stop.
I plan on buzzing the handle bars loss tonight.

Can't say I'm searching for a bakery, but a good, fresh croissant or apple fritter is worth the extra 10 miles on the bike. :)

John Stamstad, mountain biker from h#ll, consumes Little Debbies because "...they are the cheapest form of calories out there."
Ride on.

Temptress.
:)
I can't stomach those Little Debbies. They are just awful!
However, I love Hostess Cupcakes and King Dons!
I remember the advertisements on Peanuts cartoons for Dolley Madison cakes. Sre they still around? What are they like anyways?

They are okay. The rasberry-coconut covered Zingers are good. Basically, Zingers are like twinkies with frosting. Their pies are the same as anyone else's cheap snack pies. Their cupcakes are comparable to Hostess.
I like Little Debbies Swiss Rolls, Pumpkin Delites, and Figaroos. :D

Yep... crazy... you should have seen it when they opened the first (and currently only) Krispy Kreme here in the state of WA. It's just down the hill from my house... about 5 miles. The traffic in the area was horrendous for a while. I actually waited a few weeks before going there and even then it was pretty bad. I admit their donuts are good but I don't eat them that often even though I pass by the store almost every day. And yes, people get weird around Krispy Kreme. Here's a recount of my first trip to the local KK.
Strange things are afoot at the double-K. (http://www.neebu.net/~khuon/krispy_kreme-desperation.txt)

oh I forgot, to say I love to have a Macdonald "Blueberry muffin and a small black coffee.....
So with Krispy Kreme...is it anything like Dunkin Doughnuts?

Hmm... I'll probably catch some flak for this one, but I don't really understand the appeal of Krispy Kreme donuts. There's one within 2 miles of my house -- might even be the only one in the Cleveland area (?), but I don't think they're that great. They're kinda greasy tasting, in my opinion. Besides... when they cover 'em in all that glaze, what is it that they are hiding?
No, I'd rather travel 10 miles out of my way for a good JF Glaze (formerly Jack Frost Donuts) donut. JF isn't a chain. Maybe that's part of the appeal. And they have these chocolate frosted donuts with a dollop of chocolate cream on top that are simply heavenly.
Presti's in Cleveland is supposed to have the best donuts around, but I haven't tried them yet. One of these days...
