Touring - Looking for 110/74 Cranks

Best I can find in 110/74 square taper cranks is here, the XD300 for $60 (I already have rings)

I don't know what your time frame is but I'd keep looking at ebay - the XD is a okay crank set - comes in lots of models - the 300,500,600 etc $59 to $110) - main difference are the rings. This morning I wrote a piece on Sugino on the the Classic Vintage Forum. I like Sugino, but not all their crankset are great. I just done building a 110 Sugino AT set which I bought off ebay with new 9 speed raceface rings. Another set went yesterday for $22. I paid alot for more but if you have time keep looking at ebay - also look for older Specialized triples as well incredible quality

Licton's has the XD-600 for around 80. Aluminum rings, works well with my ultegra/XT/Chorus setup. :)

All of the advice give above is good but, unless you really like your bottom bracket, you might want to look at an ISIS crank (Nashbar has a good trekking crank). Square taper is kind of on the way out. The ISIS bottom bracket is really stiff. I wasn't a believer until I switched my NoName' crank for a RaceFace. The whole package is much stiffer.

Tapered bottom brackets will be around a long time unless they want to get rid of millions of cranksets. Even ISIS and Octalink are according to the literature on their way out with the new integrated bottom brackets. I am not sure I am up to buyinng a Phil Wood bracket yet which is re-builable and will last a lifetime but I have many thousands of miles on the old fashion campy bottom brackets and many 1000's of miles on the un72's. I apoligize for being terse, but I had very poor luck on several Octalink high end cranksets.

I have lots of tapered cranks and I don't have problems with them but if you are looking for a square taper crank now, it's like looking for 27" tires - hard to find and of pretty poor quality. I also have Shimano Octalink, ISIS and integrated bottom brackets. Never had a problem with any of them. The integrated are a bit futzy to set up but they are like PVC pipe for bicycling.* I would suggest ISIS over either integrated or Octalink however. I think it's just a little more robust and has a wider selection.

*Any idiot with a hacksaw can do plumbing with PVC ;)

I hope you are right about ISIS because I have RaceFace Turbines on my new tandem. My other tandem has Hope tapered tinanium bottom brackets which never had a problem. In all my years with Campy bottom brackets never an issue with tapered bottom bracket. Octalink cranks have left we stranded loaded twice in the middle of no where, so I have a bias - and yes I tighten them often!!!!
