Mountain Biking - More maintenance

I have Hayes mechanicle brake system on my bike now. This set up [ mx series ] is easy to care for. How much more maintenance would the Hayes HFX 9 series require to keep at optimum performance?

How often would i have to bleed the system and replace the fluid? Also how long would it take?

Yo, dude all you really have to do with 9's is bleed them a couple times a year and keep them clean. Mine have been working over a couple of years now and all I have done is chaned the pads and bled. Their are just more things to wear on the hydro brakes. If you know what ur doing its only like a 10 min job, if you master it, its much quicker~ cheers

why are there more things to wear on liquids???

totally like what the other poster said. brake fluid rarely needs to be bled. depends on which fluid you are running as well. the only reason fluid goes bad in autos/motorcycle is contamination with atmospheric moisture. it is hydrophilic. this is more of concern due to boiling of the fluid in high heat apps. this is not even as big a deal with bicycles. therefore they need fluid change even less. bleeding is incredibly easy on bikes....i taught my cat how to.

they are maintenance free more or less.....fantastic they are!!!!!

by more wear i mean the hose for one is much more delicate and also u have all the seals and most importantly is the piston that can get f'd if you crash. But all of these are easily fixable and this wear factor is dwarved by the positives. I personaly have grey hfx 9s on my black trek fuel and they are like jesus!!! i wish i had enough money for the adjustable el caminos tho, i tried them out and could not belive how far the technology has come on these brakes. really cant wait what the next big thing in the industry is going to be.

don't worry about wear. you could easily get 5yrs or more out of them without an issue. the seals and hoses generally last without problems. i agree with the other poster a little...but not really. :D i would so much rather deal with a closed hydraulic set-up as opposed to an icky mechanical with cables.

i guarantee you this, the piston seals and hose will be the least of your concerns when replacing worn parts on your bike.

Great, thats nice to know. I already knew about the moisture absorption of the brake fluid because of the dirtbikes I used to have. I said that I like the ease of maintenance with MX brakes, but I will definitely be getting Hydraulic now that I know how reliable they are. I guess I should know this because vehicles use Hydraulic systems, although they are mostly computerized.

oh see...they're just like dirt bikes these days. ask yourself how many times you your dirt bike's calipers and hoses were an issue?? i know my CRs NEVER had problems. at most i would lube the caliper pins so the caliper would float okay...but that was me being anal mostly. these little calipers don't even move like the dirt bikes so that is one less moving part.
