Mountain Biking - Music and riding

Do you think its dangerous to ride whlie listing to loud music. I think it really isnt much different from driving with car stereo up loud or riding a loud motocross bike. What do you think, have you had any close calls because you were listening to your ipod too loud?

i dont do it for the simple reason that i like to hear my bike, what i am riding over, and just the wonderful silence that you get in the woods.

It can and can't be dangerous. This topic has been talked over many times. IMO I think it is dangerous if there are people riding on trails. If your riding on the streets then i think its not on. If your on a local traill with no-one in sight, then its no worries.

Ditto. I've tried it before and it somehow is annoying to me.

It is distracting no matter what, but that dosn't mean you can't ride with it on. It is a good pace helper to me when riding XC, especially if your listening to a good music you can ride to and get into rythm. It sometimes also takes away attention from the 'hardness' of a climb or something, and can even get you more focused. But then again on streets/roads you would have to be stupid to ride with anything in your ear. If the trail is busy then I wouldn't recommend it, but if your on a long ride then it will help.

MANY different pro's and con's to this topic.

I guess it comes down to if you can see your surroundings with plenty time for you to stop then its ok but if your on trails with lots of blind corners ect then its a bad idea.

One of the reasons I ride is to get away from all the noise in my house. My sister always playing her crappy music, cars on the highway, my ******** neighbor. I like how peaceful the woods are. Especially since my girlfriend is so violent. Well, I wont get into that one.

I say no music, unless you are trying to keep a tempo up, then a good techno beat (I have yet to find a good one! :eek: ) can help you to keep going at a steady pace. Music helps get me pumped up to go do stuff, but sometimes it is good to just relax.

Listening to Megadeth and Jimi Hendrix while I was riding last weekend was nice. Sometimes I feel like riding with music, other times I don't... if the weather is crappy then you might as well have some music on as far as I'm concerned, since the beauty of nature isn't quite so pronounced anyway :P

By the way, if it was a crowded trail or road I'd put the earbuds back in my pocket. No one else on the trail that day, and I can't blame them. It was snowing.

I would like to ride with music but I'm scared of breaking my i-Pod if I fall. So that might be another reason why you might not want to.

My neighbour was carrying my ipod nano in his shirt pocket once, and it flew out and landed in some gravel. Could have been a bit disastrous, but it made it out without a scratch :P

lol I do it all the time. Occasionally I perfer peace and quiet:)

Put it this way... if you have to ask, your gonna learn the hard way. You can't compare it to driving a car.

My last ride was with my ipod shuffle. I rode with a buddy. I kept it quiet so that I could hear everything else (Not that you can hear much in a fullface anyway). Its nice if you load up some non-cheezy songs that get you pumped.

i ride wit an 80's boom box playing run DMC when im riding the technical stuff. People can usually hear me coming and get out of my way!

Only on my road bike when I'm working on cadence it helps but can be dangerous. Never on the mountain bike. I'm usually with other people and I take a lot of newbies out so I need to hear a crash or "wait up". Plus I worry (probably for no reason) about the cord getting caught on a branch.

if i ride with music on its usually not up really loud, and i only put one earphone in if im on the road so i can hear the cars.

This time of year--yes because there are no other riders out on my xc trails. Other times, no, too many other riders. On my road bike, never, I need to hear the cars.

i bought an ipod NANO so i could listen to bette midler away from home on the trails

Hey guys. I usually listen to my music when riding but only on trails. It does become a distraction sometimes, but it does help you if your climbing a hill.

I choose not to, mostly because I want to hear and be aware of my surroundings.
I can't count the times that I heard the 1200lb elk thrashing his way thru the brush before I saw them.
They don't always run away, cows with young elk and the younger bull elks can square off and stand thier ground.
and the elk, they are not the predators that share the trails where I am, I also want to hear the bear and the mountion lion before I find myself on my backside, staring at sky and teeth.

Fear of large wildlife, that is why I don't listen when I ride. :D

If you get hit by... a car, and your wearing your headphones, It may not be your fault, but if you could have saved your legs from getting broken. Wouldn't it have been cool if you weren't listening to music. Also i've heard of people gettin' jakked from behind because they couldn't hear what was going on behind him. That stuff's even more exaggerated if your riding at night.

I don't think its much different. You might want to look more wehe you are going if you are riding along the street. But I have done it lots of time riding on trails, and many times and the street for the matter, so I think it just comes down to how save you are.
