Are you the type that digs way in the back to get the best perishable items? Things like refrigerated items, deli items and produce? Are you a grabber or a digger? I've notice that sometimes they put the fresh ones on top (produce-no "sell by" date) because they know that people will dig in the back to get the old ones, thinking they get the new ones. Just wondering.

hehe, no but I "dig" for other stuff
at quiktrip I assume the coffee cup tops at the front have been handled by a couple dozen people so I grab from the back
I also grab anything that's in a bag from the back, assuming the ones on the front have broken stuff in them
never pursued "digging" from a freshness angle though :D

I grab from the middle...
I always go for the freshest...
working at a grocery store for years does that to you...
I go out back to the dumpster to find the stuff they throw away. I'm cheap that way. :D

Don't really care. I usually have found i end up grabbing something equally worse. I hate shopping alone though. Never can find stuff.

One of my earliest jobs was in a drugstore. The boss always told me to 'rotate stock' when putting items on the shelf (old to the front, new to the back). I learned at that time to never buy the first item your hand comes to...especially milk.
I reach for the front item....unless it's dairy or meat when they stock the shelves from the back....then I always go for the item in the back.
I thought about taking from the back, but I realized it's wasteful and pushes costs up, since it means some of the stuff at the front ends up getting outdated and discarded. I mean if the milk at the front says "best before Dec. 8" and the stuff at the back says "best before Dec 15.", and I know it'll be drunk by Dec 2. either way, what's the point of being selfish?

I grab. I go through food too quickly to care. I do check dairy but rarely find a need to find the newest stock.

My spouse is a hyper-diligent digger. Left to my own devices, I only take stuff from the front, and only from shelves I don't have to stoop to reach. Makes for an odd batch of shopping. Needless to say, as a husband, my role now is to push the cart and carry stuff home.
BECAUSE YOU CAN :D
If you were responding to my post, you missed my point. It causes me no hardship to take from the front, and it would hurt me if the store had to jack up prices due to everyone taking from the back and letting the stuff at the front expire and be wasted.

i focus my eyes on prices first, natually looking toward the cheapest. then i make a slipt second decision regarding quality, grabbing what "seems good enough" then i get the hell outta there. i hate shopping, so i like to minimize my time there.
Yeah I dig. But I am very very very picky about my food, I hate having old food, or bad food. Thats the problem with being a chef (well that will most likely be my life) you are too picky! :D

I have seen so many people diggggggg way deep, look at it, then just toss it aside. Digggggggg again, toss, dig, toss, dig, toss. In the process, damaging the item (produce). I have seen people dig to the back for gallons of milk. They will have about four gallons on the floor. After finding their treasure, they try to put the others back - but because of the weight that the other gallons on the shelf have, they force the gallons onto the rollers, and you can hear the gallons falling and exploding on the other side. Yep. It's a waste, alright.

You've got to take milk from the back -- otherwise you miss out.

I do. I squeeze the bread, check the pull-date on the milk (not that I don't go through long before then), open the egg cartons to check for cracks, and grab the lightest feeling head of lettuce.
I don't squeeze the Charmin

NO! You want the HEAVIEST head of lettuce. Heavier means more leaves, more hydrated leaves, tighter packed. Lighter means less leaves, less water in the leaves and the lettuce is opening, therefore is older. No no no....

Real people buy that new type of lettuce. Lasts 3 times as long and is healthier / nutritious.

I only dig for good fruit and veggies. Well also half and half since I hardly ever use it and it often times goes way beyond experation date. Otherwise I just grab and go. I don't really even look at the prices either. Maybe thats bad but I think in the grand scheem of things saving 20 cents on this and that in the grosery store is just a bit too much to worry over.

I described that poorly. Although I like the crispy, inner leaves, the heavy heads of lettuce tend to be nearly solid a couple layers in. That portion always seems a little starchy and is all but useless for making sandwiches because you end up with lettuce chips when you try to peel it apart instead of leaves.
