Alt Bike Culture - Wooden Recumbant?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I saw a couple this weekend, and the guy was riding a recumbant that was completely built out of wood. It must have weighed a ton, but it was pretty cool to look at. I'll bet it creaked as he rode.
Anyone ever build a wooden framed bike?

Haven't tried it yet, but it's on my list.
For some inspiration, check out some of Tom Kabat's neat bikes: http://woodenbikes.com/history.html
There are a bunch of different ideas in recumbents and wood construction, but Kabat's style is simple and appealing.

Craig Calfee, the guy that builds carbon fiber singles and tandems, also builds rideable bamboo bikes.
His black bamboo single frameset will set you back about $2,600. He also had a bamboo tandem at this years Interbike in Las Vegas, including a bamboo suspension fork! Both bikes use carbon fiber lugs to join the bamboo tubes.

Isn't bamboo a grass rather than a wood?

I built the wooden lowracer shown below. It's actually a very comfortable bike (the wood provides some passive suspension). I wasn't too careful about keeping the weight down (went with the theory that beefier was better), and the bike ended up weighing 39.5 pounds (including pedals). I raced it in a couple time trials this past summer--it did alright considering it weighed twice that as the real TT bikes in the race. Also use it for commuting; drilled a couple holes in the bottom of the chain stay beam for pannier hooks and it works great. It's a fun bike to ride and a real conversation starter.

Wooden race bicycle De wooden race bicycle. I made him of carbon and berkenmultiplex. This wood sees to for an amusing effect with lines. Do many stolen ask be: you can ride a bicycle it really on, are strengthen it well, how heavy the bicycle is and what the qualities are? The answer be: Yes, you there really on can ride a bicycle. I rode on it already a season competitions. During this season, I experienced 2 valpartijen and 2 turn my bicycle no shrinkage gave. Also I rode competitions without problems over boxes eggs. I did past year bicycle test by the V. YOU. Amsterdam. I had a topvermogen of 2200 watts. There stood no higher score in the computer meanwhile they a lot of racers had tested. I did not my best to fold the bicycle duplicate but this is me succeeded. The bicycle is not is 9.5 kilo, it absolute the lightest bicycle that exists there, but heavy is the bicycle not. As for qualities, he see between the carbon and the aluminum bicycle. I find one whole fine bicycle and as I Godfather Win must believe, become this alone only better! (see new)
