Alt Bike Culture - Wooden Recumbant?

I saw a couple this weekend, and the guy was riding a recumbant that was completely built out of wood. It must have weighed a ton, but it was pretty cool to look at. I'll bet it creaked as he rode.


Anyone ever build a wooden framed bike?

There are a bunch of different ideas in recumbents and wood construction, but Kabat's style is simple and appealing.

you can makethem at around 35 or 35 pounds if you work at it. thats standard for a non high end recumbent.

The the Bentrideronline Bent Ride '05 this August someone had a beautifully built wooden tadpole trike.
It won the award for best homebuilt. He took it on the Sunday 56 mile ride:

Craig Calfee, the guy that builds carbon fiber singles and tandems, also builds rideable bamboo bikes.
His black bamboo single frameset will set you back about $2,600. He also had a bamboo tandem at this years Interbike in Las Vegas, including a bamboo suspension fork! Both bikes use carbon fiber lugs to join the bamboo tubes.

Isn't bamboo a grass rather than a wood?

I built the wooden lowracer shown below. It's actually a very comfortable bike (the wood provides some passive suspension). I wasn't too careful about keeping the weight down (went with the theory that beefier was better), and the bike ended up weighing 39.5 pounds (including pedals). I raced it in a couple time trials this past summer--it did alright considering it weighed twice that as the real TT bikes in the race. Also use it for commuting; drilled a couple holes in the bottom of the chain stay beam for pannier hooks and it works great. It's a fun bike to ride and a real conversation starter.
