Bicycle Mechanics - Rebuild Zefal floor pump?

Hi,

My 10 year old Zefal floor pump seems to be dying - on the down stroke, it feels like it is losing air. On occasion I seem to get air, but it seems to be getting worse.

I've never re-built a pump, does anyone know if a Zefal can be? I don't know the specific model, though I can probably find out.

If there are no leaks and it is just not building pressure, try this. Unscrew the top (I assume it screws) and pull out the piston. At the end you will see a seal of some sort. Make sure its in good condition and that its greased, the grease helps to seal in the air.

You might also want to look at the fitting at the bottom of the pump. I had an old Zefal where part of the fitting became unsoldered down there and leaked. I resoldered it and it worked fine after that repair until something else went south. I wouldn't spend too much time or money on it, however. New pumps seem to get better and relatively cheaper all the time. Many also have lifetime warranties. But, you probably already know that. OHB

Bob, I won't use grease on the sealer at the end of the piston, as grease tend to degrade plastic or vinyl. The oil to use in lubricating and keeping the seal air-tight at the same time, is neet's oil. You can usually buy it at hardware stores.
