Mountain Biking - New fork Finally on order

Just wanted to say thanx to all the guys here who gave me suggestions a month of so ago. I finally found a fork / deal I couldn't pass up.

Z1 fr QR20 2002 for 680cdn - brand new clearance sale. I had to put it on layaway until I have to cash but I am still stoked. Next year my ride will be decked out. I really can't wait :)


Now I have another dilema, Who makes 20mm axles for these forks?

Sweet fork...they are smoooooth. Hey Maelstrom, I missed the thread about what bike you are getting. So what are you building up?

Actually I already have the bike. I am ripping off all of the stock parts and rebuilding more or less from scratch. I am replacing the whole drive train, front fork, front wheelset (due to the 20mm axle), headset, handlebars and seatpost. As for the frame, I own a kona Roast. I am doing all of the upgrades because next spring or maybe fall I might be able to grab an Ac1 cheap if I can swing a deal with one of the lbs's.

I still haven't decided if I really need/want a dually though :)

That fork comes with a 20mm hub. So just have your lbs tear down the wheel you have now and rebuild it with 20mm.

DON'T DO IT!!!

Stick w/ a hardtail.

Your skills will improve ten fold.

Calm down. Thats my line :D. I am going to keep the ht but some of the runs up here really do need a dually. I would eventually end up with two bikes. Urban assult / fun freeride ht and an All mountain dually that can offer the best of a lot of worlds. I am a big time advocate of ht riding but sometimes the dually is needed :)

it's just a matter of when

I would stick w/ the hardtail until you NEED the other thing.


bottom line is, full suspension is NOT needed for alot of stuff people think they are needed for.

HUGE drops and 50 mile per hour over rough ground come to mind.
otherwise it can be done on a hardtail.

if you want the bike to do all the work by an MX......

I was thinking about that after I drank a few more beers and remembered that there is some CRAZY stuff up there in canada....

No prob. I used to use those exact lines until I moved here. Some of the stuff (even just plain xc trails) out here is just plain nuts with drops, steeps and large tranny drops.

My only reason not to get a dually is the fact I may move back out east and don't really need it where I would live. Oh, that and money :)

My intellectual/practical input is limited on this. But are'nt there a number of hubs on the market that can use QR skewers and if you remove something from the hub, it'll let you use 20mm thru-axles as well?
